The Graham Slee Gram Amp 2 Communicator phono preamp is the British manufacturer’s loss leader product. This means it has been designed specifically to deliver high-end performances at low prices.
It consists of a small, black metal box around 10cm long. The front panel is very basic, with just the company logo and an LED light to indicate when it is switched on. There are no adjustable external or internal settings. And there’s no call for them either, as this product is designed for use with MM, Moving Iron and high output MC cartridges, which require a gain of around 40dB, a load of 47 Kohms and a capacitance of around 200pF. And this phono stage provides all of these options as standard! It is powered by a small 24V DC outboard power supply. If you're looking to improve sound quality by upgrading at a later date, the Graham Slee PSU1 power supply unit makes for a good replacement.
Like all of the company’s products, it is assembled by hand in the UK.
The Graham Slee Gram Amp 2 Communicator MM phono preamp is basic but meets 80% of most audiophiles’ requirements. It delivers a detailed and highly dynamic sound quality that really brings out the brightest elements of each piece of music. The sound stage and depth are remarkable for a product in this price range. It also comes highly recommended by the industry press, and there’s good reason for that!
