The Audio Technica VM 740x ML MM cartridge is the successor to the famous Audio Technica AT 150 MLX. However, it incorporates some of the innovations and technologies developed on the manufacturer's new high-end models, such as the Audio Technica VM 760x SLC cartridge. This new version receives several significant improvements.

The superb Micoline diamond is precisely bonded to an aluminum cantilever.

This profile has been optimized to provide faithful reproduction without distortion or surface noise.

Audio Technica AT VM 740x ML: Motor and Magnets

The motor is made up of dual magnets using "VM" technology. Instead of using a single large magnet, the two magnets are arranged in a "V" shape.

They are precisely positioned to match the left and right channel positions.

The VM design of this Audio Technica AT-VM 740x ML ensures better channel separation and frequency response.

PCUHD (High Purity Oxygen-Free Copper) is now used for the voice coil conductors of all models. The number of winding turns has also been reduced, resulting in a more responsive, lighter sound quality and more nuanced musical expression. The entire AT-VMx series features a large central shielding plate between the left and right channels of the voice coil. This eliminates electrical crosstalk between the two generators and maintains high separation, improving stereo.

The cell structure is made of die-cast aluminum coated with a gold layer. This provides greater mass than the polymer and improves the cell's mechanical and vibrational behavior. This results in a more accurate and nuanced reading.

The AT-VM 740x ML's structure is completely designed to minimize vibrations in the cartridge body for the most accurate and clear playback possible. In addition, the body now features threaded inserts, making it easier to attach to the headshell. A V-shaped cutout has been added to the guard as a guide for the diamond position, improving visibility of the stylus tip when placing the needle on the record.

Audio Technica AT-VM 740x ML: Test and listening

With this VM 740x ML, we find a fairly close reproduction of its predecessor. However, it should be noted that most of its qualities have been improved.

There is remarkable tracking. The surface noise level is almost non-existent.

The high end of the spectrum is very precise and particularly defined. It is teeming with details without being overly emphasized.

The midrange is clear, open, and airy. It's far from a dark or boring reproduction.

The bass, as with all cartridges from the manufacturer Audio Technica, is perfectly controlled and articulated, and offers uncommon dynamics and articulation.
