After the well-received release of the brand’s ‘flagship vessel’, the signature 12, Pro-Ject set itself the task of producing a more affordable vinyl turntable. Drawing on all of the expertise and technology developed for its high-end range, the Austrian brand has now released the new Signature 10 vinyl turntable, at half the price of the original Signature 12 model! But how have they done it?
Pro-Ject Signature 10 : Tonearm
Firstly, the tonearm is identical apart from the length: 10 instead of 12 inches. Instead of using standard bearings, it has just a single bearing, known as ‘unipivot’.
Pro-Ject Signature 10 : Plinth and platter
Like the brand’s earlier models, the Signature 10 has a mass-loaded subchassis. This creates the effect of significant mass and leads to a very low resonance frequency.
The result is improved by the addition of magnetic feet, which isolates the main chassis.
The platter and tonearm base are secured to a completely vibration-resistant heavy chrome-plated panel. It sits on three TPE vibration isolation bushings that isolate it from the main chassis.
Pro-Ject Signature 10 : Motor and drive
The motor has been designed according to a specific set of specifications to ensure that it runs noiselessly.
It is driven by a round silicone belt, which powers the entire platter.
Speed regulation is controlled by two microprocessors and two quartz oscillators, which enable changes in speed between 33⅓ and 45 RPM.
The Signature 10 is outstanding on all counts (production, user-friendliness, musicality), and its price is particularly appealing.
It has its sights set on the very high end segment of the market, which is a somewhat unexpected move from Pro-Ject. But it’s clear now that not only is Pro-Ject a benchmark in the entry-level market, it can also be relied upon to produce quality high end products.
