Description

The Rega Solis is machined from solid material. Its chassis is made from extremely dense and rigid solid aluminum, giving it a substantial weight of nearly 25 kg. The rigidity of the enclosure is remarkable. On each side, the chassis features large finned heatsinks used to cool the output transistors.

On the glossy black front panel, there are two small round push buttons:

One controls power on/off, while the other activates the mute function.

Rega Solis: connections

On the rear panel, the amplifier provides high-quality RCA and XLR analog inputs. The same level of quality is found in the speaker terminals, which naturally accept banana plugs and spade connectors. Power is supplied via an IEC C13 connector, allowing the use of a high-quality power cable.

Rega Solis: technology

The Rega Solis uses a fully balanced circuit with a common-voltage driver amplification stage. The amplification section employs twelve Sanken output transistors (six per channel), enabling the Rega Solis to effortlessly drive even the most demanding loudspeaker systems.

Nichicon audio capacitors are used at critical decoupling and bypass points. Electrolytic capacitors have been replaced with polyester capacitors where necessary, improving high-frequency performance. Non-inductive HTR resistors are used in the output stage.

The Solis uses two custom-designed low-noise 330 VA toroidal transformers with high-quality bonded-core material. This helps reduce mechanical transformer noise. These transformers are paired with 40,000 µF of Rega K-Power smoothing capacitors per channel. They deliver substantial current reserves capable of powering the most demanding loads, effectively doubling power output into 4 ohms.

All power supplies use fast-recovery rectifier diodes. These generate less high-frequency switching noise, resulting in cleaner DC power. The input and driver stages are powered by a regulated symmetrical supply with a low-noise voltage reference, ensuring perfectly stabilized and low-noise voltage delivery. This guarantees optimum sonic purity.

Rega Solis: balanced circuit

For standard domestic Hi-Fi use, Rega recommends unbalanced connections for optimum sound quality. The main circuits of the Mercury and Solis amplifiers are unbalanced by design. As a result, additional circuitry is required to create a balanced system.

Although the balanced input and output circuits of the Mercury are extremely high-performing, adding extra circuitry always introduces some degree of noise and distortion into the signal path. The benefits of noise rejection are not necessary in most domestic environments and therefore do not justify the added complexity of a fully balanced circuit.

On high-end equipment, balanced connections are often included for recording studio applications. Rega knows that some of its products are used in studio environments, which is why balanced XLR connections have been added, requiring the integration of additional circuitry.

The Solis amplifier is the culmination of nearly forty years of Rega’s expertise in developing solid-state amplifiers. This experience enabled the creation of the Solis amplification circuit. Every component selected during its development was chosen specifically for its musical qualities.

Rega Solis: sound performance

The Rega Solis prioritizes musicality and dynamics. It delivers an impressive sense of ease and power. The bass is tight and extremely authoritative. The Solis controls loudspeakers remarkably well, even those known to be difficult to drive. It does so with impact, nuance and excellent definition.

The midrange is present, dense and highly natural. Voices and acoustic instruments are reproduced with impressive body and scale. The soundstage is precise, stable and above all extremely realistic. Instrument placement is accurate and perfectly intelligible.

The Rega Solis emphasizes rhythm, dynamics, texture and musical engagement. It delivers a lively, organic and emotional listening experience without unnecessary showmanship.
