The new Rega Fono MC MK4 phono preamplifier has undergone a facelift. It is housed in a new case to aesthetically match the rest of the manufacturer's range. Technically and electronically, it shows no difference from the previous model.
It offers an affordable solution for owners of low-output MC cartridges. Until now, if you wanted a Rega phono preamp compatible with low-output moving coil cartridges, you had to turn to the Rega Aria phono preamp!
REGA FONO MC MK4: CHASSIS
The unit features an aluminum case withdimensions similar to the previous model, with a redesigned black lacquered front panel and sharper angles. The rounded design of previous versions has been abandoned.
The front panel features only an on/off switch and a backlit red logo.
REGA FONO MC MK4: SETTINGS
On the back, there are 2 pairs of RCA connectors (stereo input/output) and a ground wheel. Two sets of switches have been added, allowing the phono preamp to be configured according to the characteristics of the associated MC cartridge. It is possible to adjust the load resistance (70Ω, 100Ω, 150Ω, and 400Ω), capacitance (1000pF or 4300pF), and gain (63.5dB or 69.5dB).
The Rega Fono MC MK4 phono preamp is designed to fully exploit the potential of MC cartridges, particularly the Rega Ania and Rega Apheta 2 cartridges. However, its adjustment capabilities make it fully compatible with most low-output MC cartridges on the market.
REGA FONO MC MK4: ELECTRONICS
The circuit design of the Rega Fono MC phono preamplifier is derived from the circuitry and research carried out on the Rega Aria phono preamp.
The Rega Fono MC MK4 uses a low-noise FET transistor (LSK389). Low noise and linearity are of vital importance to getting the best performance from an MC cartridge.
Due to the high input impedance of the FET, the loading on the amplifier circuit is negligible and cannot influence the performance of the cartridge.
A MUSE operational amplifier is used in the RIAA equalization amplifier.
Polypropylene capacitors have been used in the signal path and in the RIAA equalization circuits.
