MM REGA Nd9 cartridge

The all-new Rega Nd9 moving magnet cartridge is the result of over 10 years of development. Positioned firmly in the high-end MM segment — a level Rega had never previously explored — the Nd9 promises outstanding performance thanks to its innovative “Nd” neodymium magnet technology.

Nd magnet technology

Commonly used in moving coil designs (including Rega’s own MC cartridges), the N55 neodymium magnet is now, for the first time, implemented in a moving magnet cartridge.

Neodymium (Nd) is the most powerful commercially available magnet in the world. It is the key component that makes this new design possible, delivering significantly higher output and improved control compared to traditional MM constructions.

The Nd9 also features miniaturized parallel coils, wound with 38-micron wire over 1,275 turns. This results in a low-inductance, low-impedance generator, dramatically improving high-frequency response and overall clarity.

Glass-filled PPS body

The entire generator assembly is housed in an injection-molded glass-filled polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) body. This advanced material is both lightweight and extremely rigid.

The low-mass construction reduces stress on tonearm bearings and allows greater freedom of movement, a crucial factor for accurate vinyl tracking. The design draws inspiration from Rega’s high-end MC range.

Mounting is achieved using two hex screws into threaded inserts, compatible with standard headshells. For Rega turntables, a third mounting point ensures enhanced mechanical stability and simplifies alignment and setup.

Boron cantilever & fine line stylus

Each Nd9 is meticulously hand-assembled by Rega’s skilled technicians.

It features a Perfect Nude Fine Line diamond stylus, paired with a precision-polished boron cantilever. This combination ensures exceptional tracking accuracy and extracts an extraordinary level of detail from the vinyl surface.

One of the major engineering challenges was coupling the powerful Nd magnet to a solid boron rod. To achieve this, Rega collaborated with a renowned horologist to manufacture an ultra-fine connection tube with different diameters at each end.

Boron is exceptionally light and remarkably rigid. Its low mass allows faster response to groove modulations, while its stiffness minimizes deformation, resulting in more precise motion transfer and reduced distortion.

Rega’s unique pivot design further enhances performance by eliminating mechanical coupling between the diaphragm housing and the main body, significantly improving tracking stability and accuracy.

Sound performance

From the very first notes, the Rega Nd9 reveals an impressively neutral sonic signature.

It delivers remarkable detail across the entire frequency spectrum — from deep, textured bass to a richly informative midrange and refined, extended highs. Even in complex musical passages, each instrument and performer remains clearly defined and intelligible.

The bass is powerful and deeply extended, revealing subtle textures and layers. The midrange and treble are fluid, nuanced and dynamic, with excellent coherence.

The Nd9’s greatest strength lies in its ability to preserve rhythmic drive and dynamic expression, while remaining refined and musical. It combines precision with emotional impact — capable of delivering the goosebumps often associated with high-end low-output MC cartridges.
