Dual CS 618 Q turntable

The Dual CS 618 Q differs from other models in the range by offering semi-automatic functions, direct drive, and an Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge. Additionally, it includes an MM phono preamplifier and speed change options for 45, 33, and 78 RPM.

DUAL CS 618 Q: PLINTH

The plinth is made of solid MDF, providing excellent rigidity and a strong barrier against resonances. It also features internal vibration absorbers.

It is covered with high-quality vinyl, available in two finishes, imitating black wood grain or walnut. The base rests on elastomer feet. The turntable comes with a transparent acrylic dust cover.

DUAL CS 618 Q: MOTOR AND PLATTER

The Dual CS 618 Q is equipped with a quiet direct drive motor that precisely maintains the platter speed.

It is controlled by a precise optical sensor that regulates the speed accurately. The motor is mounted on rubber supports to decouple vibrations.

The platter is precisely die-cast aluminum with a thick (2.5mm) rubber mat to limit resonances. This platter is heavier than the one on the Dual CS 518 model.

DUAL CS 618 Q: TONEARM, CARTRIDGE, AND PHONO PREAMP

The Dual CS 618 Q turntable features a new 8.7-inch straight aluminum tonearm with a gyroscopic (gimbaled) pivot. It rests on four ball bearings, mounted on a double gimbal. The (non-standard) headshell is removable if needed. It comes standard with an Ortofon 2M Blue MM cartridge. This tonearm is fully adjustable, allowing future cartridge changes and modifications to tracking force and antiskating. However, the height (VTA) is not adjustable.

This tonearm includes automatic lift and electronic motor stop at the end of the record. This function can be disabled via a switch on the back of the turntable.

The Dual CS 618 Q is equipped with a small, defeatable MM phono preamp via a push button on the back of the turntable. It allows connecting the turntable to an auxiliary input of any audio product. However, this phono preamp does not seem to match the performance capabilities of this turntable.

The phono cable is not captive and can be replaced with a higher-performance model.

DUAL CS 618 Q: TEST & LISTENING

The Dual CS 618 Q benefits from having an integrated MM phono stage, which none of its competitors offer. This is an advantage, but the preamp is very limited and does not fully utilize the turntable's capabilities in terms of dynamics and timbre, or transparency. It is suitable for very short-term use, but upgrading to a much more capable phono preamplifier will be well justified.

The sound quality meets the high standards expected from the German manufacturer Dual. The soundstage is relatively expansive and precise enough to make the music realistic. It also offers rich timbre with convincing presence. It reproduces low frequencies with great depth while remaining precise. The listening experience is engaging, immediately immersing the listener in the analog world. The dynamics, presence, and openness characteristic of vinyl playback are evident. It might seem slightly less lively and dynamic than some of its rivals, but in a balanced system, this is not a problem. The CS 618 Q is truly talented sonically, and its balance is reminiscent of the excellent turntables from the late 1970s.
