Dual CS 518 turntable

The Dual CS 518 turntable represents the manual version of the Dual CS 529 BT. However, it receives all the enhancements of the latter (MM phono preamplifier, 45 and 33 rpm speed change), but without the automation functions.

DUAL CS 518: PLINTH

The plinth is made of solid MDF, which gives it excellent rigidity while offering an excellent shield against resonances. Additionally, it internally receives vibration absorbers.

It is covered with a decent quality vinyl available in two finishes, imitating revered black wood or walnut. The base rests on elastomer feet. The turntable comes with a transparent acrylic cover.

DUAL CS 518: MOTOR AND PLATTER

The Dual CS 518 is equipped with a belt-drive system via a direct current motor. This is controlled by a precise optical sensor, allowing for precise speed regulation. The motor rests on rubber supports allowing vibration decoupling.

The platter is precision die-cast aluminum. It receives a thick rubber mat (2.5mm), which helps limit resonances. This platter rests on a tempered steel shaft inserted into a brass sleeve.

A more serious and seemingly robust construction is also noticeable compared to previous models.

DUAL CS 518: TONEARM, CARTRIDGE, AND PHONO PREAMP

What sets the Dual CS 518 apart from its little sister, the CS 418, is the new 8.7-inch straight aluminum tonearm, particularly its gimbal-type pivot. It rests on 4 ball bearings mounted on a double cardan. The cartridge holder (non-standard) is removable if needed. It comes standard with an Ortofon 2M Red MM cartridge.

This tonearm is fully adjustable. It is thus possible to change the cartridge in the future, and adjust tracking force and anti-skating accordingly. However, note that the height (VTA) is not adjustable.

The Dual CS 518 is equipped with a small MM phono preamp, which can also be disengaged via a push button at the back of the turntable. However, it allows connecting the turntable to an auxiliary input of any audio product. The phono cable is not captive and can be replaced with a higher-performing model.

DUAL CS 518: TESTING & LISTENING

The Dual CS 518 merits having an integrated MM phono stage, which none of its competitors offer. While this is an asset, the preamplifier is quite limited and does not fully leverage the qualities of this turntable in terms of dynamics and tone. It's suitable for short-term use, but upgrading to a more capable preamp is justified. Listening is on par with what one would expect from the German manufacturer Dual. The playback is dynamic and highly expressive, allowing for convincing nuance tracking. The soundstage is relatively expansive and precise enough to render the work realistically. It also offers a lovely tonal richness with a convincing presence. It reproduces low frequencies with considerable depth while remaining precise.

Listening is engaging; one is immediately immersed in the analog world. The dynamics, presence, and characteristic openness of vinyl playback are all present.

The CS 518 turntable is sufficiently talented in terms of sound quality to serve as an alternative to Rega or Pro-Ject turntables in this price range.
