Description

In order to offer a more affordable product, JR Transrotor stripped the renowned ZET-1 of its elements while trying to keep the reproduction qualities which made the brand famous. This is how the Transrotor Max turntable was born.

TRANSROTOR MAX: CHASSIS

The solid aluminium chassis was shrunk to a minimum. It rests on three imposing feet allowing precise horizontal adjustment.

The sub platter and the spindle/bearing (brass with ceramic ball-bearing) rests inside an aluminium base having the same size and roughly the same height as the platter.

It’s worth mentioning that the chassis of the Transrotor Max features a cylindrical-shaped cut allowing to receive and hide the motor below the turntable. This is made possible via a smaller belt drive which however prevents manual speed control. The Transrotor Konstant-Eins power supply is therefore required.

TRANSROTOR MAX: PLATTER AND DRIVE PRINCIPLE

The platter rests on a subframe. This is the part that is driven via a belt by the motor. Indeed, the platter of the Transrotor Max is not driven at its rim.

The platter is machined from a 7 kg solid aluminium block. This block is similar to the ZET-1’s. The inside surface is covered with wave-shaped grooves, carved directly in the metal.

It’s not just for show. It allows to reduce platter vibration. The platter receives a satin black acrylic mat.

TRANSROTOR MAX: TONEARM, CARTRIDGE AND PHONO CABLE

The Transrotor Max turntable is supplied with a Rega RB220 tonearm. It was modified and optimised to adapt to the characteristics of the turntable as well as Transrotor’s requirements. It’s an aluminium tonearm with a 9” effective length allowing VTA adjustment.

The Transrotor Darkstar is equipped as standard with an Uccello MM cartridge which is very similar to the Goldring 1022GX MM cartridge.

The phono cable is not captive. The tonearm end has a DIN connector. Our tests proved that the quality is excellent, so there’s no need to replace the standard phono cartridge.

TRANSROTOR MAX: TESTING AND LISTENING

This turntable is without a doubt a Transrotor product! We can feel the brand’s typical dynamics and authority. The sound is very clean and detailed. Bass is particularly tense and articulated while offering outstanding transparency. There’s a beautiful midrange which is authentic and full of details.

Treble quality depends on the cartridge and the preamplifier used. With a low output MC cartridge, we obtain a nice subtlety and a surprising nuance.

Besides, changing the platter mat for a more efficient model provides more realism in terms of substance and timbre.

The Transrotor Max turntable is designed for those who love neutrality and transparency. It seems to be free from any colouration. The Transrotor Max is the complete opposite of some turntables fostering a romantic and coloured sound.

It may not have the nuance and subtlety of the ZET-1, but still, it’s a bargain at this price!
