Description

The Fezz Gaia Prestige is the Polish manufacturer's first phono preamplifier to use tubes in its audio circuit. This approach allows it to deliver remarkable musical performance.

Fezz Audio Gaia Prestige: Overview

The Gaia Prestige is built around a small, shoebox-shaped aluminium enclosure. It is available in several anodised finishes. Its reasonable dimensions allow it to fit easily into small spaces.

The front panel has no buttons, only the "Fezz" logo, which is backlit to indicate that the unit is switched on. On top of the unit, a window looks onto a stainless steel housing where you can see the two 12AU7 tubes.

On the back, you will find a pair of RCA inputs, a pair of outputs and a ground terminal. These connectors are of excellent quality. There is also a push button to select the cartridge type, either MM or MC, plus a second push button that adds 6 dB of gain to the selected setting. Mains connection is via an IEC C13 socket, so you can use a good power cable.

Fezz Audio Gaia Prestige: Technology

The Fezz Gaia Prestige is a phono preamplifier compatible with low and high output MC and MM cartridges. The manufacturer specifies an MM gain of 42 dB / 47 kΩ and a low output MC gain of 60 dB with a 100 Ω load, making it compatible with most MC cartridges with an output level of 0.50 mV or higher.

The circuit uses a dual-mono architecture with a tube amplification stage. The brand chose a well-known double triode, the 12AU7/ECC82. This stage operates in Class A to deliver exceptional performance in terms of timbre and scale. The two 12AU7 tubes are specially selected, low-noise types. The power supply is built around a Supreme Audio Toroidy.pl transformer.

The quality of the circuit and components delivers a signal-to-noise ratio above 90 dB, channel separation above 86 dB and, above all, very low distortion, below 0.2%!

Fezz Audio Gaia Prestige: Sound

From the very first bars of listening to the Fezz Gaia Prestige, we were struck by the quality of its timbres and its sonic signature. The midrange is both warm and dense, while giving voices an "organic" quality. Strings and brass are reproduced with great realism and presence. This is paired with silky, smooth treble that is in fact very realistic and quite informative.

The Fezz Gaia Prestige delivers very solid, well-defined and very analogue bass. Kick drums and bass lines are dynamic and punchy.

Like many tube phono preamplifiers, the Gaia Prestige offers a beautiful soundstage. The stereo image is wide and deep and faithfully conveys the reverberation of the recording venue.

The Gaia Prestige effortlessly renders nuances, light attacks, note decays and small changes in intensity that contribute to the realism of the reproduction.

The Fezz Audio Gaia Prestige is extremely musical and engaging. It seems slightly warmer than its competitors in this price range. It favours the analogue side of music and the texture of instruments.

FAQ: Everything you need to know before buying the Fezz Audio Gaia Prestige Phono Preamplifier

Why does the Fezz Audio Gaia Prestige use tubes?

Its dual-mono circuit includes a Class A tube amplification stage based on two specially selected, low-noise 12AU7 double triodes. This choice aims for exceptional performance in terms of timbre and scale. For more on the role of this component, read our page about phono preamps.

What is the +6 dB button on the Gaia Prestige for?

In addition to the MM / MC selector, a second push button on the rear adds 6 dB of gain to the chosen setting (42 dB in MM, 60 dB in MC). This lets you adapt the level to your cartridge. Our cartridge buying advice and our page about cartridges explain the differences in output level.

How do I connect the Gaia Prestige to my system?

It offers a pair of RCA inputs, a pair of RCA outputs, a ground terminal and an IEC mains inlet. Connect your turntable to the input, then the output to your amplifier using RCA interconnect cables. Our guide to Hi-Fi cables and their roles walks you through each connection.

What sound character can I expect from the Fezz Audio Gaia Prestige?

It is extremely musical and engaging: a warm, dense midrange with "organic" vocals, silky yet informative treble and solid, punchy bass. The soundstage is wide and deep, and nuances, attacks and note decays are rendered with ease. Our favourite for bringing your turntable to life.
