Description

The Fezz Gaia is the second model in the Polish manufacturer's range of phono preamplifiers. Yet it offers surprising audio solutions and performance.

Fezz Audio Gaia: Overview

The Gaia is built around a small, shoebox-shaped aluminium enclosure. It is available in several anodised finishes. Its reasonable dimensions (21 x 32 x 9.5 cm) allow it to fit easily into small spaces.

The front panel has no buttons, only the "Fezz" logo, which is backlit to indicate that the unit is switched on.

On the back, you will find a pair of RCA inputs, a pair of outputs and a ground terminal. These connectors are of excellent quality. There is also a push button to select the cartridge type, either MM or MC. Mains connection is via an IEC C13 socket, so you can use a good power cable.

Fezz Audio Gaia: Technology

The Fezz Gaia is a phono preamp compatible with low and high output MC and MM cartridges. The manufacturer specifies an MM gain of 53 dB / 47 kΩ. Low output MC gain is rated at 60 dB with a 100 Ω load, making it compatible with most MC cartridges with an output level of 0.50 mV or higher.

The circuit is built around a very high-end integrated circuit, the Burson Audio Supreme V5i. This op-amp is a hybrid audio circuit, combining integrated circuits and discrete components to deliver exceptional performance. In terms of performance, it comes quite close to its big brother, the V5, considered by many to be the benchmark in the audio world.

The V5i has a bandwidth extending up to 50 MHz. Although these very high frequencies are inaudible to the human ear, they contribute to the overall listening experience and to the harmonic richness of the reproduction. The V5i delivers dynamic, transparent sound with a very wide stereo image.

It also offers a signal-to-noise ratio above 92 dB, channel separation above 95 dB and, above all, very low distortion, below 0.008% in MC mode!

Fezz Audio Gaia: Sound

From the very first bars of listening to the Fezz Gaia, we were struck by its dynamics and its silences.

The low end is solid and deep, with a good foundation and no overhang. The midrange offers rich, warm timbres, particularly effective on vocals and acoustic instruments.

The top end is detailed and nuanced, with no real harshness. The soundstage is wider and more expansive than with the Gaia Mini, and instrument separation is more obvious.

The Fezz Audio Gaia is musical and slightly warmer than its competitors in this price range. It favours the analogue side of music over absolute neutrality.

FAQ: Everything you need to know before buying the Fezz Audio Gaia Phono Preamplifier

What does the Burson Audio Supreme V5i op-amp bring to the Fezz Audio Gaia?

The Gaia's circuit is built around this hybrid component, which combines integrated circuits and discrete parts. Its bandwidth reaches 50 MHz and it contributes to dynamic, transparent reproduction with a very wide stereo image. To understand where this stage sits in your system, read our page about phono preamps.

Is the Gaia suitable for my MM or MC cartridge?

It accepts MM cartridges (53 dB gain, 47 kΩ) and low and high output MC cartridges (60 dB gain, 100 Ω load), compatible from 0.50 mV output. Selection is made with a simple push button on the rear. Our complete guide to choosing a phono preamplifier helps you match your cartridge's type and output level.

Which cables do I need to set up the Fezz Audio Gaia?

The Gaia has high-quality RCA inputs and outputs, a ground terminal and an IEC inlet that lets you fit a good-quality power cord. Between the preamp and the amplifier, RCA interconnect cables carry the signal. Our guide to Hi-Fi cables and their roles helps you make the right choice.

How does the Fezz Audio Gaia sound?
