The AudioQuest Storm Thunder is part of the new generation of AC power cables in the American manufacturer’s Storm series. It is the first model in the range and is equipped with active DBS (Dielectric-Bias System) polarization.

AudioQuest Storm Thunder: Features

This new power cable uses Perfect-Surface Copper (PSC) conductors. These conductors are predominantly PSC with a Long-Grain Copper (LGC) core. This geometry significantly reduces transient intermodulation distortion (TIM).

While many power cables offer low resistance to meet high current demands, the characteristic impedance of a cable is also crucial to deliver optimal performance.

Unlike most cables that shrink or compress transients, AudioQuest AC power cables combine low DC resistance with ZERO characteristic impedance. This allows them to deliver uncompressed high-current transients.

AudioQuest Storm Thunder: Shielding

In addition, the cable incorporates the manufacturer’s proprietary DBS polarization system. A module on the cable polarizes the shield with a 72V current. All shields are also equipped with a dielectric whose electrical properties affect signal integrity.

The DBS-polarized shielding (AudioQuest patented) creates a powerful and stable electrostatic field that saturates and polarizes the insulation. This minimizes noise and prevents RF interference from infiltrating the electronics.

The DBS batteries are rated for a lifespan of approximately 10 years. A test button on the module allows the battery status to be checked.

AudioQuest Storm Thunder: Current Delivery

The Storm Thunder cable offers a current capacity of 16A, making it ideally suited for current-hungry components.

Power amplifiers present a real challenge for any power source, as transient current demands (although short in duration) can be several times higher than average (RMS) current consumption.

Power amplifiers are also unique compared to other components in that their current draw is dynamic rather than constant, changing with volume level and audio signal content. Many high-end power cords shrink or compress audio transients because their characteristic impedance restricts transient current flow.

AudioQuest Storm Thunder: Test and Listening

The AudioQuest Storm Thunder effectively reduces AC mains noise present in audio/video systems, as well as subjective distortion. Sound reproduction appears much more accurate and highly transparent. Dynamics are outstanding and present across the entire audio spectrum.

As with all AudioQuest power cables, adding the Storm Thunder elevates low-frequency performance to a new level. Bass reproduction shows improved definition, superb dynamics, and exceptional articulation. The presentation is also clearer and more open.

An improvement in soundstage and precision in the placement of individual instruments and sections is also noted.

With a current capacity of 16A, the AudioQuest Storm Thunder power cable can handle transient current peaks several times higher than its continuous (average RMS) rating.
