After a well-deserved success and widespread acclaim from the press, the best-seller of REGA the P3 turntableis replaced by a more advanced version. It takes the name of a model that has now become legendary:« THE PLANAR 3 » !
It must be recognized that the task is not easy...REGA must spare no expense to convince us of this new version!
Rega Planar 3 : Bras
According to "boss" Roy Gandy, the development of this new version lasted two years, and only two elements were retained from the P3. To begin with, the new RB330 arm was completely redesigned using 3D simulation. It benefits from 35 years of experience in the field.
It features new friction-free bearings and a new tube profile with less resonance. The column has been stiffened and adjusted better.
The counterweight has been improved to a mass of 100g. The wiring has also been replaced with less capacitive conductors and new original Neutrik RCA plugs.
The arm allows the mounting of very high-end cartridge, both in MM that in MC. The REGA Nd3 cartridge seems to be the minimum choice on this REGA Planar 3 turntable. As always, if you choose a cartridge from another brand, you will need to add a spacer under the arm in order to have a perfect VTA.
Depending on your choice, we will adjust it, and as usual, we will deliver it to you perfectly adjusted and ready to use.
Rega Planar 3: Base and tray
The laminate baseboard is coated with an acrylic veneer to improve its rigidity. It is available in three lacquered finishes: black, red, or white.
We find the “double brasse” crosspiece which stiffens the bearing/arm axis. It is made of phenolic on the underside, and of metallized phenolic on the upper face.
The on/off button has been placed on the underside of the plinth.
The bearing and counterplate have been revised and benefit from better machining and a better fit.
This more rigid and quieter rotating assembly features a new 12mm thick polished silica platter. It must be used with a platter cover. REGA delivers its traditional version in pure wool felt.
The whole thing rests on new feet that are more stable and less sensitive to vibration phenomena.
Rega Planar 3: Training
The whole thing is driven by a motor similar to that of theRega Planar 8 turntable. Its map has also been modified and improved, allowing for better training consistency.
We find the aluminum pulley, also present on theRP6 turntable. This Planar 3 may subsequently also be advantageously supplied by a REGA Neo PSU MKII in order to improve the performance of the whole.
Rega Planar 3: Test and listening
The first measures are unequivocal! We are indeed in the presence of a REGA turntable, and that’s reassuring!
We find the musicality and the ease of providing pleasure specific to the brand. The restitution is very coherent and particularly balanced. The dynamics are remarkable and the rhythmic tracking exemplary! Presence is also its asset… The voices are remarkable in their presence and emotion.
It seems much more precise and defined than previous versions. The neutrality is also well above what REGA has accustomed us to this price range.
Rega Planar 3: Unboxing
Implementation remains extremely simple, but it still requires a minimum of precaution. We recommend a rigid (not necessarily heavy) and perfectly level support. The wall mount is, as always with REGA, the best choice (Support mural REGA).
Once these precautions are taken, use remains very simple.
The new benchmark made in the UK! You haven't heard the last of it!

Magnifique Planar 3
Je peux dire que la Planar 3 est à la hauteur de sa réputation ! C'est une excellente platine ! Pour remplacer ma planar 1 je voulais continuer avec Rega pour la platine mais avec une autre cellule que Rega que je trouvais un peu terne, pas assez nerveuse pour mon écoute majoritairement rock. Et là je remercie beaucoup FRANCK pour son conseil : le cellule MM Nagaoka MP-200. La clarté, douceur et finesse des aigus, profondeur des basses, dynamique... c'est magnifique je redécouvre mes vinyles !
Magique
Équipé depuis quelques années d'une platine marantz TT45 avec cellule ortofon MM "premier prix", j'avais l'impression d'avoir un "bon" son même s'il manquait un peu de "relief" (difficile de parler du son en langage clair).
Cela faisait plusieurs mois que je voyais cette platine Planar 3 et j'hésitais ne sachant si cela allais vraiment être un plus dans l'écoute.
Après plusieurs échanges avec Franck, il m'a conseillé de l'équiper d'une cellule MC Hana EL (j'étais partis pour une MM). D'après lui, une MC même de moyenne gamme sera toujours meilleure qu'une MM haut de gamme.
Alors... alors...
Je dois reconnaître que l'association de la planar 3 avec cette cellule est magique. Sur du jazz, de la soul voir de la variété française et surtout les "lives", c'est un vrai bonheur. Plus rien à voir avec mon ancienne marantz. Les instruments sont tous là, bien dissociés. Les voix sont superbes. Associé au préampli Project tube box S, le son semble "planer" dans la pièce. On est au concert dans son salon.
Après je suis incapable de dire quel élément est le plus important dans la chaîne mais je pense que le mix des 3 (platine, cellule, pre-ampli) sont vraiment très cohérent. Je pense également que les enceintes et l'ampli sont importants dans la restitution mais cela est une autre histoire (je possède des klipsch RF 82 et j'adore leur dynamisme associée a un "petit" ampli marantz).
Merci encore a Franck pour ses conseils éclairés et à toute l'équipe de maplatine pour la rapidité et la qualité de l'envoi (on ne lésine pas sur l'emballage chez maplatine!)
Quelle merveille !
Je m'étais privé de sa première version au début des années 80 en l'échangeant contre une platine CD qui promettait le paradis... Même si je fus saisi par l'extrême précision analytique des CD, je ne cessais durant toutes ces années de penser à cette douce REGA d'autrefois.
Au printemps dernier, sa toute nouvelle et troisième version me fit intensément de l'œil au point de me décider cet été que le temps des retrouvailles était enfin venu...
Je déguste depuis tout plein de délicieux moments d'écoute d'une musique dont j'avais oublié la douceur des timbres...
