The Gold Note PH-5 is the latest model of the Gold Note preamplifiers range. It was created with the aim of providing the quality and performance which have made the Gold Note PH-10 famous at a more affordable price. The PH-5 preamplifier features most of the PH-10’s technical characteristics which make it stand out from the competition.
GOLD NOTE PH-5: FRONT AND BACK PANEL
This phono preamplifier is characterised by different aspects specific to it.
First off, it is shaped like a “shoe box” (semi-chassis). The whole housing and the front panel are made of black varnished steel. In comparison, the PH-10 is entirely made of aluminium.
The front panel features a unique and magnificent touch display. It’s possible to select the type of phono cartridge (MM or MC), gain, load and the RIAA curve.
The rear panel provides an RCA phono input. There is an RCA output as well as a balanced XLR output. There’s also the multipin socket for the power supply in option, the IEC socket and a Micro USB for the firmware update.
GOLD NOTE PH-5: SETTINGS
The Gold Note PH-5 is a truly versatile phono preamp providing all the functionalities that can be expected from a high-end phono stage.
The adjustment of MM and MC gain (40 dB/60 dB with -3 dB/6 dB) and load (10, 22, 47, 100, 220, 470, 1k, 22k et 47 kΩ) allows combination with a large number of high and low output cartridges.
The PH-5 phono preamplifier lets you choose the most appropriate equalisation curve for each vinyl record: RIAA, DECCA London or American Columbia. The curve appears clearly in the shape of a graphic on the display. Each curve can be “enhanced” with our proprietary technology inspired by the Neumann Cutting Lathe for superior high frequency dynamics and reproduction up to 50 kHz .
You should know that 95% of records are based on the RIAA curve. The other curves are for specific vinyl discs which are mainly from before 1958 (introduction of the stereo record). However, it’s true that some labels (very few) used the Decca and American Colombia curves until the late sixties. It is often indicated on the LP’s sleeve.
GOLD NOTE PH-5: COMBINATIONS
To maximize the performance of the PH-5, Gold Note also developed the PSU-10, a dedicated external super inductive power supply that allows the PH-5 to achieve its fullest potential. This allows to reach an even higher degree of musical realism, better dynamics, and greater three-dimensionality sound.
Its technical characteristics allow it to be associated with most low output and high output MC cartridges and every single MM cartridge.
GOLD NOTE PH-5: TESTING AND LISTENING
From the first few measures, the Gold Note PH-5 preamplifier offers a very detailed sound reproduction with beautiful timbres.
There’s the soft and silky treble of the Gold Note PH-10.
The width of the soundstage is very demonstrative even though it can’t compete with its “big brother”. Yet, it is stable and very precise while offering an excellent definition.
The PH-5 provides a nice presence and excellent realism on the voices and strings. There’s less dynamics compared to the Gold Note PH-10, but it’s still superior to the competition in this range.
The MC gain can go up to 66 dB allowing to drive low output MC cartridges with up to 0.3 mV of output level. We’ve obtained outstanding results with a Hana SL, an Audio Technica AT OC9XSH and an Ortofon Quintet Black S.
The Gold Note PH-5 might not be the best phono preamplifier ever, but not a single model has better musicality below 1,000 euros! Furthermore, it is surely the most versatile product in its category. And last but not least, it can eventually be associated with an external power supply so it can turn into a real mean machine!

PH-5 + PSU-5
Deuxième avis suite à l'adjonction de l'alimentation dédiée PSU-5.
On rentre dans une autre catégorie avec l'alimentation séparée, bien meilleure stéréo, placement des instruments parfait, les basses (après un bon rodage d'un mois) sont bien tendues et on entend les différentes articulations.
Le point qui m'a plus bluffé est cette facilité à faire sonner tout juste et à un niveau correct. Aucune fréquence n'est "sur-amplifiée", tout est à sa place et garde un souci permanent de douceur.
À titre de comparaison, je trouve qu'on se situe dans les mêmes performances qu'un Vida Prima, sauf le PH-5+PSU5 est moins lumineux dans le haut du spectre.
Rapport Qualité-Prix imbattable
Après plusieurs mois de recherche d'un préampli se marriant bien avec mon système (rega brio + enceintes mulidine allegretto v4 + rega rp3/hana sl), j'ai trouvé dans ce préampli tout ce que je cherchais (et bien plus encore :) ) .
Pour comparaison, j'ai eu le pro-ject tube box et le tube box ds2 ainsi qu'un vida prima. À mon humble avis, le PH5 se situe bien au-dessus des pro-ject, sans pour autant égaler les détails et les transitoires d'un vida prima.
Au niveau du son, ce PH5 délivre un son très très immersif, un des plus beau médium que j'ai pu entendre (et que je préfère à celui du vida prima), des aigus détaillés et soyeux (qui ne cassent pas la tête après 1 heure d'écoute) et de très bonne basses même si je trouve qu'on peut faire un peu mieux sur ce registre.
La qualité première de cet ampli est d'apporter une très grande dynamique tout en conservant ce son en trois dimensions, précis, articulé et très soyeux. Le son a ce grain qu'on pourrait qualifier de légèrement coloré mais pourtant jamais redondant !
Mécaniquement bien construit, on entend les relais "claquer" à chaque changement de réglage. On peut aussi totalement éteindre l'écran ce qui rend l'appareil très discret avec sa fine lumière bleu.
Entre la pléthore de réglages (inédit dans cette gamme de prix ?), les nombreuses sorties (rca et xlr !) et la possibilité de lui adjoindre une alimentation dans le futur, c'est un appareil que je recommende chaudement.
