McIntosh DS200: Front panel

This McIntosh network player/DAC embodies all the DNA of the American manufacturer. It features the iconic glass front panel with the traditional green backlighting for the indicators.

On the left, a potentiometer controls the inputs and access to the device menu. On the right, a similar button controls the variable volume and navigation. Four buttons control streaming navigation and four others control BT, display, mute and power.

All source and status information is shown on the LED display in the middle of the front panel.

 

McIntosh DS200: Connections

The back of the McIntosh DS200 offers a plethora of connections related to its functions! There are analogue RCA outputs and balanced XLR outputs.

For the DAC section, the DS200 offers two SPDIF coaxial digital inputs and two Toslink optical digital inputs, as well as a 110 ohm AES/EBU (XLR) input. Still on the digital side, it offers an HDMI ARC digital input, a USB digital input and an RJ45 network input. The DS200 is also equipped with an MCT socket that allows signals to be transferred from McIntosh products equipped with this MCT connector, as well as for SACD audio.

Two Wi-Fi 6 antennas and a Bluetooth antenna ensure stable and high-performance wireless connections.

 

McIntosh DS200: Technologies

The McIntosh DS200 is a versatile device that offers a wide range of features, wired and digital connections, and wireless streaming.

The MS200 is compatible with many leading streaming technologies and platforms, including Apple® AirPlay®, Bluetooth®, Google Cast™ (formerly Chromecast), Qobuz Connect, Spotify® Connect (including Spotify Lossless) and TIDAL® Connect (including TIDAL Max). No specific control app or technical skills are required.

For Bluetooth streaming, the MS200 uses Bluetooth 5.0, the high-bitrate Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) standard, Qualcomm® aptX™ HD.

In order to deliver the highest possible quality when playing digital music, the MS200 incorporates an audiophile-grade digital-to-analogue converter (DAC). This new-generation 8-channel 32-bit Quad Balanced DAC offers a wide dynamic range and low distortion, regardless of the file format. Resolution reaches 32/384 kHz, DSD64, DSD128, DSD256, DXD352.8 kHz, and DXD384 kHz!

The HDMI (ARC) input allows you to connect your television and enjoy the sound of your hi-fi system. Popular Dolby® and DTS® multichannel audio formats are accurately converted to stereo audio for optimal playback.

The DS200 is also Roon-compatible, making it a compatible device with the Roon music player. Roon centralises all your music and adds a wealth of information: biographies, reviews, photos, lyrics, tour dates and credits (with links to further information) for artists, songwriters, producers, sound engineers and composers. Roon Ready network devices incorporate Roon streaming technology and are certified by Roon to deliver optimal quality and performance in network streaming. The DS200 has also received Roon Tested certification, as Roon has tested it to ensure simple installation and intuitive everyday use.

McIntosh DS200: Sound reproduction

From the very first notes, the DS200's remarkable presence in the low frequencies is noticeable. It delivers deep, powerful bass with remarkable impact.

This network player/DAC reproduces the lower end of the spectrum with remarkable transparency and precision.

The reproduction of the midrange is particularly successful. It demonstrates a rich timbre and remarkable realism.

The treble is also a real success. The upper end of the spectrum offers a remarkable balance between precision and smoothness.
