The 2000 series is Goldring's latest product and was marketed in 2009.
Technically, the range builds on the 30-year expertise and technology developed for the 1000 series, with a few innovations, and above all, the will to achieve high performance levels on a tight budget.
It is available in 5 models with various stylus and generator qualities (magnets, coils, etc.). The Goldring 2200 MM cartridge is the second model in the range
Goldring 2200: presentation
The packaging and presentation are amazingly elegant for a cartridge in this range.
OK, a box does not play music, but it's always nice to have a product that looks the part!
Goldring 2200: body and stylus
This MM cartridge is easily recognisable with its distinctive round design. It is easily secured to the headshell as the body has threaded inserts that are compatible with standard pitch screws.
The generator is designed based on very powerful Cobalt/Samarium magnets.
The elliptical stylus is mounted onto a light alloy cantilever.
Goldring 2200: compatibility
Its weight, tracking force and high compliance (20) make it compatible with most good quality tonearms.
Its high output level above 6 mV and impedance of 47 kOhms make it readily compatible with a good quality preamplifier that is not necessarily exorbitant.
Goldring 2200: listening and review
We enjoyed pairing this Goldring 2200 with LINN and REGA tonearms, with which it seems to agree.
Like many good quality cartridges, it needs a break-in period of a few hours to get the final balance.
After it's settled in, the sound becomes subtle and well articulated, with precise and clear treble without any harshness.
The bass is tight and very vibrant, certainly the most authentic for the range. It delivers a very demonstrative sound with electro music and Trip Hop.
The mids are bright and very open, the vocals are present and stand out amid the instruments.
The Goldring 2200 also works well with Jazz and big Classical orchestras.
The Goldring 2200 MM cartridge is a great multipurpose, vibrant, punchy and very subtle cartridge, an excellent alternative to the Ortofon 2M Blue or Grado Gold MM cartridges.
We recommend it!
