The new Musical Fidelity M6xi integrated amplifier marks a major evolution within the manufacturer’s lineup. It replaces the renowned M6si and incorporates part of the technology developed for Musical Fidelity’s prestigious TITAN series.
The M6xi is essentially a fully analog preamplifier combined with two monoblock power amplifiers sharing the same chassis.
Its impressive specifications make it an extremely versatile integrated amplifier, fully capable of driving demanding and very high-end loudspeakers.
Musical Fidelity M6xi: front panel
Like all Musical Fidelity products, the M6xi features a very minimalist design. The front panel is machined from thick, solid extruded aluminium. The side panels, which also function as heatsinks for the power stages, are equally made from extruded aluminium. The entire construction feels extremely solid and remarkably rigid.
The M6xi is available in black or natural aluminium finishes. Despite its understated appearance, it provides all essential controls.
At the center sits a large rotary volume knob, flanked on each side by small push buttons corresponding to the selection of the 10 available inputs.
A traditional power button is located on the far left.
Musical Fidelity M6xi: rear panel
The rear panel includes four RCA line-level inputs and one balanced XLR input. In addition, there is a pre-out for connecting a power amplifier and a line-out for a recorder or headphone amplifier.
Musical Fidelity has also integrated an excellent phono stage with a dedicated switch allowing MM or MC cartridge selection. This section has been significantly improved compared to the previous model, benefiting from enhanced shielding and circuit optimizations for lower noise, reduced distortion, and greater transparency. It is compatible with moving magnet cartridges as well as both high-output and low-output moving coil cartridges.
The M6xi features a digital board fully separated from the analog circuitry. It includes coaxial, optical, and USB-C digital inputs supporting high-resolution formats up to 24-bit/192 kHz, as well as an HDMI eARC input for audio/video systems. A USB-B audio input is also provided, coupled to an asynchronous DAC compatible with digital signals up to 24-bit/96 kHz.
At each side of the chassis, the speaker outputs use excellent WBT terminals compatible with banana plugs and spade connectors.
It should also be noted that the “AUX1” input can be switched to bypass mode via a small dedicated switch.
Power is supplied through a standard IEC connector, allowing users to upgrade the power cable if desired.
Musical Fidelity M6xi: technology
Musical Fidelity states that the technology used in the M6xi is directly derived from the manufacturer’s renowned high-end Titan amplifier.
The M6xi delivers 220 watts per channel into 8 ohms and can provide over 450 watts peak into 4 ohms. To achieve this, each channel uses a dual push-pull output stage based on Sanken Darlington transistors.
This low-distortion design, following Musical Fidelity’s classic configuration, eliminates crossover artifacts while maintaining extremely low residual distortion. It enables the M6xi to preserve remarkable transparency and tonal accuracy across the entire frequency range.
At the center of the chassis sits a large encapsulated dual-winding toroidal transformer. Each winding independently powers one channel. This substantial power reserve and stability allow the amplifier to drive a wide range of hi-fi loudspeakers, including demanding models.
The preamplifier section operates entirely in pure Class A. This choice ensures excellent transparency and impressive dynamics while maintaining extremely low noise and outstanding analog signal integrity. The stepped volume control also provides better channel matching and improved sound quality compared to conventional potentiometers.
It should be noted that the digital and ARC boards are physically separated onto their own PCBs and benefit from dedicated linear power supplies.
The Musical Fidelity M6xi is supplied with a redesigned remote control featuring a more elegant design and improved ergonomics. It is universally compatible with the manufacturer’s M-Line range, including amplifiers, CD players, and DACs.
Musical Fidelity M6xi: test and listening impressions
The Musical Fidelity M6xi delivers an extremely dense and fluid sound reproduction. It retains the energy and rhythmic drive of the previous model while offering even greater ease in terms of dynamics and nuance.
The M6xi creates a remarkable sense of space and scale. The soundstage is precise and relatively holographic, making classical music particularly immersive and convincing.
The bass is deep, full-bodied, and highly analog in nature. It favors an organic and warm presentation while maintaining excellent control. This contributes positively to tonal richness and realism.
This is complemented by a transparent and luminous midrange combined with a smooth yet highly detailed treble response. Vocals, brass instruments, and strings display a truly natural texture and exceptional presence.
The Musical Fidelity M6xi is undoubtedly one of the finest hi-fi integrated amplifiers available in its price range. It combines outstanding versatility with surprising musicality and can easily be paired with most loudspeakers on the market, including very high-end models.
The Musical Fidelity M6xi probably represents what a modern analog integrated amplifier should be. It delivers true high-end audiophile performance while remaining faithful to the prestigious Musical Fidelity design philosophy, making this level of performance more accessible.
