Cambridge Audio CXA81 MK2 integrated amplifier

After several years of success, the CXA81 undergoes some modifications and thus becomes the Series II.

The Cambridge Audio CXA81 MKII is the most advanced integrated amplifier in the manufacturer's CX range. It offers most of the functions of high-end Hi-Fi products while providing top-notch musicality.

CAMBRIDGE AUDIO CXA81 MKII: FRONT PANEL

The "titanium" brushed aluminum front panel has been reworked and offers superior finish and craftsmanship compared to the manufacturer’s previous models.

Functions and source selections are made on a central panel via small push buttons.

On the right, there is a large volume knob and, on the left, a headphone output in a 3.5 mm jack format.

CAMBRIDGE AUDIO CXA81 MKII: REAR PANEL

On the back of the CXA81 MKII, there are 4 unbalanced analog RCA inputs and one balanced XLR input.

Additionally, there is a coaxial SPDIF digital input (16/24 bits 32-192 kHz), two optical Toslink digital inputs (16/24 bits 32-96 kHz), and an asynchronous USB digital input (32 bits 384 kHz PCM, up to DSD256 or DoP256).

Cambridge Audio has complemented this with a wireless aptX HD Bluetooth digital connection (24 bits 48 kHz).

This integrated amplifier also offers a mono Sub output and a stereo preamp output.

CAMBRIDGE AUDIO CXA81 MKII: CIRCUITRY

With the cover removed, we discover an architecture based around a toroidal transformer and 4 large filtering capacitors placed in the center of the chassis.

There are the two amplification boards on each side, connected to a heatsink. Additionally, there is the DAC board and connectivity. The CXA81 MKII is packed to the brim! However, the industrial build quality is excellent for a product in this range.

It is noticeable that the DAC section has been modified. The ESS Sabre ES9016 K2M DAC has been replaced with the new Sabre ES9018 K2M 32-bit 384 kHz reference. This allows for exceptional fidelity in playing HD or Hi-Res files.

CAMBRIDGE AUDIO CXA81 MKII: TEST AND LISTENING

Implementation is simple and quick. From the first measures, the Cambridge Audio CXA81 MKII shows detailed and transparent sound, all with beautiful dynamics. The playback is open and expansive. The soundstage is precise and surprisingly wide. The transparency and precision of the previous model are also present.

Its tonal balance is particularly successful and appealing. The Cambridge Audio CXA81 MKII offers a holographic rendition with a 3D sensation! The dynamics are excellent and the speaker control is just as good. It is impressive with voices, brass, and strings, where a maximum of details can be perceived while remaining textured and full.

With USB connection, the ESS Sabre ES9018 K2M DAC is formidable and allows for exceptional fidelity in playing HD or Hi-Res files.

The Bluetooth connection offers a decent performance for this type of connection, although very noticeably below other analog or digital connections.
