MC Dynavector DV 20X-2A H cartridge

After almost 10 years of success, the Dynavector DV 20X2 H has undergone a number of technical changes and become the DV 20X2A H. This entry-level model (for Dynavector) is offered here in a high-level MC version.

Dynavector DV 20X-2A H: Body

This new version uses the same basic structure as the top-of-the-range Dynavector XX2-A and Dynavector Te Kaitora Rua models.

It has a hardened aluminium alloy body. This has been specially optimised to offer perfect rigidity and low resonance. It is finished in a dark grey structured non-magnetic paint.

The chassis is fitted with threaded inserts for hexagonal mounting screws. Connection is via traditional silver-plated pins.

Dynavector DV 20X-2A H: Generator

The magnetic circuit, which is the ‘motor’ of an MC cartridge, uses pure iron, which has stable magnetic properties with very low distortion. What's more, by specially annealing this part of the generator, Dynavector has managed to achieve distortion-free reproduction and very high resolution.

This is combined with patented soft magnets, developed to reduce the distortion and high-frequency aggression caused by standard magnets. These neodymium magnets nonetheless ensure high efficiency, preserving dynamics and transparency.

This high-efficiency 20X2A-H model achieves an output level of 2.8 mV thanks to specific Dynavector windings. By winding the coil several times with ultra-fine wire, it is possible to obtain a high output, equivalent to that of an MM cartridge, so this MC cartridge can be connected to a very good MM PHONO input without the need for a pre-amplifier or Step Up transformer.

Dynavector DV 20X-2A H: Diamond and cantilever

The Dynavector 20X2A-H is fitted with a hollow hardened aluminium cantilever.

This reduces the mass of the moving part while retaining excellent rigidity, giving a wide bandwidth and precise high frequencies.

The cantilever is fitted with a diamond-cut Micro-Ridge profile. Although the part that comes into contact with the groove of the disc has a radius of curvature of just 2 microns, the complex Micro Ridge shape of the tip makes it resistant to abrasion and enables it to deliver unaltered performance over a long period.

The Dynavector 20X-2AL has a compliance of 12mm/N and a weight of 9.2g, making it compatible with most light and medium-weight tone arms (between 8 and 19g).

Dynavector DV 20X-2A H: Testing and listening

Of course, the quality of the low-level version is still there.

The bass lines have weight and plenty of articulation. The bass falls very low without ever losing its legibility.

The midrange is open and detailed, with plenty of expression and nuance. This is very demonstrative on a piano or string quartet.

The dynamics and sense of rhythm are remarkable, and you'll find yourself tapping your foot to the rhythm of the piece you're listening to with the Dynavector 20X-2AL.

This cartridge offers a musical balance and coherence that seems superior to that of its competitors.
