This new Chora line succeeds the line of Focal Chorus speakers. This one has been a reference in its range for many years.
The Chora series has the particularity to be built around a new speaker and a new slate-colored membrane, called “Slatefiber” by the manufacturer.
The Chora series is represented by 3 models of Hi-Fi speakers: two towers and one bookshelf. They offer a modern design quite different from the previous range.
The Focal Chora 816 is a Bass reflex 2.5-way speaker. The mid and low frequencies are reproduced thanks to a 16.5 cm drivers equipped with the Slatefiber membrane.
The Slatefiber technology, exclusive to Focal, consists of non-woven recycled carbon fibres, placed in sandwich between two layers of thermoplastic polymer.
In their quest for perfection, Focal engineers decided to use non-woven carbon fibres, all oriented in the same direction in order to have even greater rigidity and better damping.
Made in France using a very sophisticated industrial tool, this very light membrane with a "slate" effect, allows you to obtain more damping and rigidity than a cellulose membrane.
The membrane is protected thanks to a metal grid.
The bass transducer is loaded in Bass/Reflex via a port on the front panel of the Focal Chora 816 speaker. It is associated to a mid-range speaker of the same technology processing the band between 270 and 2700 hz.
It is relayed in the high frequencies by an aluminium/magnesium TNF tweeter. The suspension of this transducer connects the dome to its Poron support.
This shape memory suspension is similar to the famous Utopia Beryllium tweeter. The inverted dome limits directivity and increases spatialization.
Bass and midrange drivers are concealed behind a magnetic cloth cover with circular edges.
This tower speaker is perfect for rooms between 20 and 30 m². It is based on an inclined stand to respond to “Time Alignment” and provides a more accurate and a sound scene more centered to the listener.
This support receives spikes in order to decouple the speaker as much as possible from the ground.
The connection to the amplifier is via a simple and well-made terminal block, that accepts bare wire, banana plugs or forks.
After about twenty hours of running-in, the restitution of this Focal Chora 816 speakers is surprisingly open and easy.
The quality of this pair of speakers is certainly its balance and neutrality. These qualities give excellent versatility in terms of kinds of music and electronics.
The timbres are correct and also very rich. The Chora 816 speakers are dynamic and very articulated, bringing light to details with ease.
The mid-range/treble is clear and open. It offers a lot of nuance and presence. The bass is superb, as always with Focal! It is very realistic and present without doing too much.
Note also that the opening is present, even with modest electronics!
These Focal Chora 816 tower speakers are certainly the best deal of the moment in their category, and they are French!
