B&W 606 bookshelf speakers

The B&W 606 bookshelf speakers are replaced by the B&W 606 S2 Anniversary bookshelf speakers.

The B&W 606 bookshelf speaker is the worthy heir of the DM “Domestic Monitor” ranges by the British manufacturer B&W. It is the second speaker of the 600 Series range that counts 3 speakers: two “bookshelf” and one tower.

B&W 606: DESIGN AND FRONT PANEL

We find the common dimensions of the speakers in this range, even if these ones can be considered as quite large with their 35 cm high and 30 cm deep.

The speaker grille, made of black or grey jersey following the finish (black or white), is held on the front panel by magnets. This allows you to leave it completely blank if you remove the grille.

B&W 606: TWEETER

The B&W 606 offers two transducers: the treble is entrusted by a new 25 mm aluminium tweeter. It is an improved version of the decoupled double dome tweeter.

The resonance frequency has been pushed to 38 kHz to offer outstanding clarity and precision.

B&W 606: SPEAKER

The midrange and the bass are reproduced by a 165 cm Continuum cone speaker. This cone developed over 8 years by Bowers & Wilkins has superior performance to the Aramid fiber used in previous 600 ranges.

With this matter, Bowers and Wilkins ensures a rendering in the midrange of an incomparable quality in transparency and dynamics.

This speaker is loaded in Bass reflex with a Flowport ™ port that lead to the back of the Hi-Fi speakers. Under this one, we find two gold-plated terminals.

B&W 606: WIRING

We can wonder what is the use of the bi wiring over Hi-Fi speakers of this range, apart removing the “impurities” of the links?

We recommend you a good mono wiring by replacing the original links by more serious versions or simple speaker cable.

B&W 606: INSTALLATION

The execution is pretty simple and does not require precaution, except to put them between 60 and 80 cm of ground and not to place them too close to the wall. It is recommended to leave 25 cm behind the speaker if you want to keep a realistic bass.

The B&W 606 speakers are delivered with two foam filters that can be placed in the port to change the frequency response in the bass if necessary. B&W offers a high quality, specific stand for speakers, the B&W Stav24 S2.

B&W 606: TEST AND LISTENING

The restitution of these B&W speakers is surprising by its breadth and natural. The music fills the room with a remarkable ease. However, the sound stage remains precise and quite realistic. It is more convincing on Jazz and Rock than on Classical music, because the depth is less emphasized than the width.

The transparency is associated to a very beautiful tonal balance that makes this speaker very versatile in terms of association with an amplifier. This speaker is easier to “drive” than its little sister, the B&W 607 bookshelf speaker.

The midrange is perfectly reproduced with a remarkable precision and presence. The tweeter is of a great delicacy and is perfectly integrated to the medium.

The bass goes very low. It is better to avoid placing them too close to a wall so as not to exaggeratedly and artificially increase this part of the spectrum. So you can understand that we discourage you to place them in a bookshelf!

This new B&W 606 bookshelf speaker is ideal for use in a living room of about twenty square metres and with quality small-integrated amplifiers.
