Hana is none other than a subsidiary of the Japanese manufacturer Excel Sound Corporation. The company made a name for itself a few years ago with the release of the Hana EL and Hana SL MC cartridges. Within a few months, these two models had become undisputed benchmarks for music lovers and specialized journalists.
Following this well-deserved success, Hana is back in a big way with a higher-end and more ambitious model: the Hana ML cartridge!
Hana ML: Body
Externally, it looks quite similar to its smaller siblings, although the shape is more complex and less basic than that of a Hana SL.
The PVC body has been replaced with a P.O.M. (Delrin) version. This material offers excellent acoustic and, in particular, mechanical properties. P.O.M. does not resonate within the audible spectrum and perfectly controls vibrations.
A gold-plated alloy base has been added to the body. This increases the effective mass of the phono cartridge from 7g to 9.5g, providing better coupling with the tonearm.
The Hana ML attaches to the tonearm via two screws and two brass inserts integrated into the body. The nut-free mounting is simpler and provides better clamping torque.
Hana ML: Stylus
Hana has abandoned the Shibata stylus used in the SL model in favor of a Nude Microline profile. This choice is consistent with the rest of the cartridge’s design and is therefore uncontroversial.
This diamond stylus offers perfect tracking with virtually no surface noise and high transparency. It is mounted on a fairly traditional hollow aluminum cantilever.
The generator is made of pure steel that has undergone cryogenic treatment. It is paired with Alnico magnets and high-quality copper coils.
Hana ML: Setup and Adjustments
We were lucky enough to get an early look at this phono cartridge! Setup is straightforward. Alignment is not difficult, and VTA is not particularly critical.
For our tests, adjusting the phono preamplifier proved more challenging. This MC cartridge must be loaded at a minimum of 100 ohms. Testing a step-up transformer was not very conclusive. The best balance was achieved around 200 ohms, though it’s worth noting that above 500 ohms, the load has little to no influence.
Hana ML: Review and Listening Impressions
From the very first measurements, we were surprised by the definition and refinement of this Hana ML cartridge.
The sound is very transparent and, above all, quiet. This helps bring out even the finest details. The soundstage is precise, and everything is perfectly in its place.

This Hana phono cartridge isn’t “round” or “warm.” The bass is very articulate and punchy. It varies completely from one recording to the next, with plenty of nuance and detail.
The overall sound is very musical and offers a finesse found in certain Japanese cartridges costing two or three times as much.
This Hana ML MC cartridge represents the manufacturer’s current best work. It will delight music lovers with a very good turntable, an excellent phono preamp, and those who want to keep the cost of their phono cartridge reasonable!

What kind of cartridge is the Hana ML, and what preamp is it for?

Excellent RQP
J'ai acheté cette cellule suite aux conseils de l'équipe et pour remplacer une ortofon Cadenza Black.
Sur le papier elle a beaucoup d'atouts mais la différence de prix jouait clairement en sa faveur.
A l'écoute elle s'avère beaucoup plus chaude et mélodieuse que la cadenza, attention malgré tout les réglages de charge et de force d'appui sont à prendre au sérieux et à affiner aux petits oignons.
Chargé à 400r la scène sonore c'est vraiment ouverte, idem pour la force d'appui, je lui trouvais un manque de matière dans le haut du spectre et un médium un peu trop présent mais très charnel, avec un apoui légèrement accentué j'ai trouvé un équilibre qui me convient.
Pour faire court, c'est une cellule qui favorise la musique plutôt que la recherche du micro détails, une cellule à privilégier pour les mélomanes plus que pour les écoutes " intellectuelles".
Elle est cependant capable de beaucoup de détails et de nuances et saura calmer un système montant.
Son atout majeur est dans le choix de la taille du diamant, je n'ai jamais eu une écoute aussi silencieuse, elle surpasse la cadenza sur ce point et c'est difficile de s'en passer après. Il faudra néanmoins être attentif à jouer des disques en bon état mais surtout propre car la moindre information est extraite du sillon sans distinction :)
Un achat que je recommande les yeux fermés, certainement le meilleur RQP du marché
Pas déçu
En remplacement d’une cellule cleraudio MM maestro V2 déjà une très bonne cellule, mais franchement qu’elle surprise à l’écoute de cette fabuleuse cellule, vraiment pas déçu avec un preampli audio analogue AA avec une charge de 400 ohm.

Un bon en avant
En remplacement d'une 2M Black, j'ai opté pour cette MC bas niveau et je dois dire que je ne suis pas déçu ! La MM de chez Ortofon faisait déjà des merveilles sur de très bons enregistrements. Mais avec la Hana ML j'ai franchi un cap. Malgré qu’elle soit encore en cours de rodage (seulement une vingtaine d'heures), ce qui m'a frappé de prime abord c'est sa grande cohérence sur tout le spectre. Les timbres sont très riches notamment sur les cuivres et le piano. Les basses sont punchy et descendent bas avec beaucoup de lisibilité sur un jeu de contrebasse et sur la batterie, la grosse caisse est présente avec une assise convainquante. Le haut du spectre n'est pas en reste et les aigus filent haut sans aucune agressivité. Le médium quant à lui offre une qualité de timbre très naturelle et les voix sont limpides et charnelles à la fois. En résumé, le rendu sonore est très cohérent, rien n'est mis en avant de manière exagérée. Une très bonne cellule en somme. Je suis sûr qu'elle va encore se dévoiler au fil du rodage. Un grand merci à toute l’équipe de Ma Platine pour le sérieux et la rapidité de livraison (commande passée le lundi et reçue le mercredi suivant !) et un merci particulier à Franck pour sa disponibilité et ses conseils avisés. Choix confirmé
Cette cellule est montée sur une platine Réga P6 avec son adaptateur et reliée à un préamplificateur phono Gold Note PH 10 qui alimente un ampli AR I10 ou Réga Elicit MK 5 au choix.
Au paravant j'avais une cellule haut niveau Réga Exact et je dois dire que le saut entre les deux cellules est assez vertigineux bien aidé par le Gold Note.
Par contre je ne puis quantifier l'apport de ce préamplificateur qui au demeurant m'avais apporté un gain de musicalité avec ma cellule haut niveau.
Qui dit amélioration de la musicalité certes, mais cette cellule fait ressortir les mauvaises prises de son et les défauts des galettes.
Je ne regrette absolument pas mon choix.
