Description

This bundle offer a fully realised analogue solution, combining the refined elegance of the Rega Planar 6 in matte white finish with the natural musicality of the Hana SL MKII low-output MC cartridge. A carefully considered pairing, delivered pre-mounted and aligned by our team. All you have to do is place it on your shelf, plug it into your system and dive into your records.

The Rega Planar 6 White: the evolution of a best-seller

After the unprecedented success of the Rega RP6, the British manufacturer went back to the drawing board to design this Planar 6, drawing on the technologies developed for the RP8 and RP10. The result is a more accomplished, more mature and more capable turntable than ever.

Visually, the lacquered finish has given way to a matte HPL coating (high-pressure laminate), here in white, for greater understatement and durability. The ultra-light plinth, drawn from aerospace technology, reduces mass by more than seven times — Roy Gandy's credo: only the platter needs mass, as too much weight in the plinth would harm dynamics. To stiffen the structure, "Double Brace" aluminium reinforcements link the tonearm to the platter spindle, ensuring a perfectly inert mechanical line.

The whole rests on three feet with a redesigned profile, combining elastomer and aluminium. The solid aluminium subplatter houses a brand-new pivot and brass bearing well. The dual-layer silica platter (clear/smoked) is paired with a fully antistatic wool felt mat.

Drive is handled by a 24 V high-precision synchronous motor, hand-tuned and matched with its NEO PSU MK2 power supply. The latter borrows the DSP generator from the RP10: a high-stability quartz produces the sine wave that drives the platter with accuracy below 0.15 %, completely immune to mains voltage or frequency fluctuations. The traditional belt has been replaced by a Rega High-Performance belt, and the pulley has been re-machined with remarkable care.

The tonearm is the superb RB330, fully machined and hand-assembled, here fitted with a specific stainless-steel counterweight, denser than the standard one. The captive phono cable is, as always with Rega, of excellent quality. The turntable comes with its smoked dust cover, reminiscent of the Rega Planars of the 1980s.

The Hana SL MKII: Japanese analogue refinement

Following the global success of the original Hana SL, the Japanese manufacturer thoroughly revised its low-output MC cartridge to bring us this Hana SL MKII, more accomplished in every respect.

The ABS body adopts the general shape of the Hana ML and is coated with a black elastomer resin that dampens vibrations and mechanical noise. The main evolution: the addition of a black-tinted brass base plate that brings mass to the cartridge (8.6 g compared to 5 g on the previous version) and integrates a threaded insert, doing away with nuts during installation. A detail that makes a real difference in daily use.

The conical aluminium cantilever is paired with a beautifully polished elliptical Nude Shibata diamond. Its complex profile hugs the groove walls perfectly, delivering exemplary tracking and a striking reduction of surface noise. The generator, similar to that of the Hana ML and Umami Blue, uses 4N copper wire 30 μm in diameter, with cryogenic treatment of the gap, coils and pins.

In terms of specs, the 0.4 mV output level makes it compatible with most MC phono stages on the market (minimum 60 dB gain). The 8 Ω coil impedance allows for resistive loading around 100 Ω, the standard value found on most integrated amplifier MC inputs and quality phono preamps. Its compliance of 10 to 100 Hz makes it highly versatile, working well with both lightweight and medium-mass tonearms.

A synergy designed and aligned by our team

This is the real value of the bundle: the Hana SL MKII is pre-mounted and aligned on the RB330 tonearm in our workshop, with the appropriate spacer added since the cartridge is not Rega's own. You skip the most delicate part of the installation and benefit from a fully optimised analogue system from the very first listen.

The pairing brings out the best in both components: the Planar 6's rhythmic precision and exceptional dynamics are magnified by the timbre and tonal density that the Hana SL MKII delivers with a naturalness rarely heard in this price range.

Sound: timbre, texture and emotion

The Rega Planar 6 stunned us from the first measurements with its dynamics and timing: authority over orchestral masses, finesse and nuance when the music calls for it, and a remarkably low noise floor that lets you hear everything buried in the groove. Believable, lifelike midrange, sublime vocals, accomplished tonal balance — versatile enough to move seamlessly from a Bach requiem to Kraftwerk's "Trans Europ Express" without missing a beat.

The Hana SL MKII adds a timbre-focused presentation to all of this, with greater texture and realism than its predecessor. Instruments sit perfectly in their place, the bass is articulate and well defined, the midrange comes close to perfection with present and organic vocals, and the treble remains detailed without any harshness, even in the most demanding passages. The Shibata diamond works wonders: surface noise and distortion are among the lowest in the segment.

A pairing that will delight discerning music lovers, drawn to timbre and the silky character of analogue playback.

Our top pick

The overall performance of the Rega Planar 6 is exceptional, and the Hana SL MKII is one of the finest alternatives to the Ortofon Quintet Black in its category. Together, they form a high-end analogue system, delivered ready to play by our team.
