Description

The VPI Prime marked the beginning of a new era for VPI by delivering exceptional performance at its price point. It was the first VPI turntable to come standard with a 3D Unipivot JMW tonearm.

The Prime 21 builds upon the original concepts while introducing several modifications and innovations—most notably a new tonearm featuring gimbal pivots.

VPI PRIME 21 : Chassis

The plinth of the VPI Prime 21 is made of thick, rigid MDF covered in vinyl, combined with a steel plate to increase rigidity and mass. This construction helps reduce vibrations and prevent harmful resonances during playback.

The chassis features a four-arm “star” shape. At its extremities, the plinth rests on four massive HW-40 feet, ensuring optimal mechanical decoupling from its support.

A larger cavity on the left side houses the drive motor.

VPI PRIME 21 : Tonearm

The tonearm selected by VPI is the new 3D-10 JMW. This 10-inch tonearm is equipped with gimbal pivots, offering high stability and precise tracking.

The entire arm is manufactured using 3D printing technology and is composed of epoxy resin and Delrin. Internal wiring is carried out by the manufacturer using copper Litz wire.

The arm provides all essential adjustments: tracking force, azimuth, anti-skating and VTA. The VTA (Vertical Tracking Angle) can be precisely adjusted via VPI’s “VTA On The Fly” system.

The phono cable output is located behind the tonearm base through a pair of gold-plated RCA connectors and a grounding knob.

VPI PRIME 21 : Platter and Drive system

The VPI Prime 21 is equipped with a solid aluminum platter measuring 30.5 cm in diameter and weighing 9 kg. It is paired with a rigid felt mat.

The platter rests on an inverted bearing with a ball bearing at its tip.

The aluminum platter is belt-driven using a round-section belt powered by a large motor housed in a massive stainless steel chassis. This housing prevents vibration transmission to the support and therefore to the turntable and tonearm.

Since the motor does not physically touch the turntable, the only connection between them is the belt, making vibrations virtually nonexistent.

The drive pulley offers two levels for 33 and 45 RPM speeds. The turntable is supplied with a Delrin screw-down clamp.

VPI PRIME 21 : Sound performance

The VPI Prime 21 delivers dynamic and highly lively reproduction with a grand soundstage. Music is presented with power and boldness, yet the turntable also controls this intensity with a subtle blend of elegance and spaciousness.

The midrange remains refined during intimate passages—such as voice and piano—while unleashing full power during orchestral climaxes.

Like the Prime Extended, already a benchmark in adaptability, the Prime 21 shows an impressive ability to adjust to different musical styles. Bass performance is exceptional in scale and articulation, delivering a physical and authoritative presence. It is dynamic enough to satisfy even the most demanding listeners, regardless of musical genre.

The bass is complemented by a magnificent midrange rich in harmonic texture and expressive, precise treble.

Soundstage width and depth are equally remarkable, contributing to an immersive listening experience.

With the Prime 21, VPI has created a true high-end turntable without compromise. While it may be possible to design an even more ambitious model, it would likely not be offered at this price level.
