Description

The VPI Scout 21 is the latest evolution in the iconic Scout lineage. It retains the series' fundamental principles while incorporating significant technical improvements.

VPI SCOUT 21: Chassis

The plinth of the VPI Scout 21 is constructed from vinyl-wrapped MDF. To provide greater rigidity and mass, a steel plate is added beneath the chassis, effectively reducing vibrations and preventing harmful resonances during playback.

The chassis features a four-arm "star" shape, similar to the VPI Prime models. At its extremities, the plinth rests on four massive feet that mechanically decouple the turntable from its support. On the left side, a dedicated cavity houses the drive motor. The phono output is located at the rear of the chassis, featuring a pair of gold-plated RCA connectors and a grounding post.

VPI SCOUT 21: Tonearm

VPI has selected the well-known JMW-9 tonearm for this model. This 9-inch tonearm features a unipivot bearing design. Its horizontal and vertical rotational axis relies on a single sharp pivot point on which a cup rests inside the arm’s bearing housing.

The tonearm tube is crafted from aluminum, paired with a rigid steel headshell. Internal wiring is meticulously handled by the manufacturer using high-quality copper Litz wire.

VPI SCOUT 21: Platter & Drive System

The VPI Scout 21 is equipped with a solid aluminum platter measuring 29.2 cm in diameter and weighing 4.7 kg. It is paired with a rigid felt mat. The platter sits on an inverted bearing system with a ball bearing at its tip.

The aluminum platter is driven by a round-section belt, powered by a high-torque motor housed in a massive stainless steel chassis. This isolated housing prevents vibrations from being transmitted to the support, and consequently to the turntable and tonearm.Since the motor has no physical contact with the plinth, vibrations are virtually non-existent.
The drive pulley features two levels, allowing for manual speed changes between 33 and 45 RPM.

VPI SCOUT 21: Sound Performance

From the very first notes, the VPI Scout 21 demonstrates an admirable ability to reproduce complex recordings and dynamic passages with ease. All of this is delivered with impressive clarity and remarkable transparency.
The VPI unipivot tonearm and the turntable work in perfect harmony, ensuring excellent groove tracking and revealing the true musicality of the recording. The Scout 21 delivers striking dynamic contrasts across various musical genres. When paired with a high-quality low-output moving coil cartridge (such as the Ortofon MC X40), the scale and realism of the soundstage are truly surprising.

As the most accessible model from the American manufacturer, the VPI Scout 21 offers exceptional value for money. It combines captivating musical performance with genuine ease of use.
