Dual CS 418 turntable

The new Dual CS 418 turntable is the first audiophile turntable in the manufacturer's lineup. This turntable is essentially the manual version of the Dual CS 429. However, it incorporates the latest technologies to provide Dual quality and performance at an affordable price.

DUAL CS 418: PLINTH

The plinth is made of MDF, which provides excellent rigidity while effectively dampening vibrations. Additionally, it contains internal vibration absorbers. It is covered with a high-quality vinyl finish imitating revered black wood. The base rests on elastomer feet. The turntable comes with a transparent acrylic cover.

DUAL CS 418: MOTOR AND PLATTER

The Dual CS 418 features a belt drive system powered by a direct current motor. It is controlled by a precise optical sensor, allowing accurate speed regulation. The motor sits on rubber mounts to decouple vibrations.

The platter is made of die-cast aluminum. It is paired with a thick rubber mat (2.5mm) to minimize resonance. This platter sits on a hardened steel spindle inserted into a brass sleeve.

DUAL CS 418: TONEARM, CARTRIDGE, AND PHONO PREAMPLIFIER

The Dual CS 418 turntable is equipped with an 8.6-inch straight aluminum tonearm. The headshell (non-standard) is removable if needed. It comes with an Ortofon 2M Red MM cartridge.

This tonearm is fully adjustable, allowing for future cartridge upgrades and adjustments to tracking force and anti-skating. However, note that the vertical tracking angle (VTA) is not adjustable.

The Dual CS 418 features a built-in MM phono preamplifier that can be bypassed via a push-button switch on the rear of the turntable. It allows the turntable to be connected to an auxiliary input of any audio product. The phono cable is not captive and can be replaced with a higher-performing model.

DUAL CS 418: TESTING & LISTENING

The Dual CS 418 offers many strengths: firstly, its tonal balance is quite flattering, appearing less dark than equivalent competing products. However, it still provides substantial weight and substance to the notes. Its dynamics are also very respectable for a turntable in this price range, and its transparency is excellent.

Of course, further improvements can be achieved by upgrading to a 2M Blue stylus and using a separate, higher-quality phono preamplifier.

The Dual CS 418 turntable is a pleasant surprise, offering truly analog sound reproduction at a reasonable price.
