After the Pro-Ject X-tension 12 Evo, the X-Tension 10 Evo and the X-Tension 9CC Evo turntables, Pro-Ject extends its range with a more affordable "latest addition": the X8 Evolution turntable.
PRO-JECT X8 Evolution: tonearm
You get the well-known 9CC Evo arm that also equips the Pro-Ject X-Tension 9CC Evo turntable and the Pro-Ject RPM 9 Carbon manual turntable.
It is a one-piece 9-inch carbon fibre arm with a gyroscopic pivot, therefore symmetrical in horizontal and vertical movement. It comes with a No. 46 counterweight that makes it compatible with cartridges weighing between 7 and 10 g. The base of the arm has a 5-pin DIN connector, as on SME, Ortofon or Linn arms. As standard, the Pro-Ject X8 Evolution turntable ships with a Pro-Ject Connect it E 5P → RCA phono cable, 1.23 m long.
PRO-JECT X8 Evolution: plinth and platter
The turntable is made of thick MDF, which gives it remarkable rigidity, mass and mechanical grounding. It comes in three superb finishes: piano gloss black, piano gloss white and satin genuine walnut veneer.
The magnificent platter is machined and polished from solid aluminium. Its damping is handled by a sorbothane ring underneath, around its edge.
Unlike the X-Tension 9, it is not topped with a bonded vinyl layer. This means a platter mat has to be used. As standard, it comes covered with a felt mat.
This platter, weighing over 5 kg, rests on an inverted bearing, with a stainless steel spindle and a brass bearing with a ceramic ball.
The sub-platter is damped by magnetic repulsion. A powerful ferrite ring in the platter is set in magnetic opposition to another ring in the turntable.
The plinth rests on 3 aluminium feet. Damped with sorbothane, they allow level adjustment and considerably reduce the risk of acoustic or mechanical disturbance.
The Pro-Ject X8 Evolution turntable comes with an acrylic dust cover as standard.
PRO-JECT X8 Evolution: motor and drive
The new DC motor is electronically managed and, via two selectors, allows 33 and 45 rpm to be chosen. It drives the platter around its edge with a silicone belt.
PRO-JECT X8 Evolution: testing and listening
Pro-Ject offers this turntable without acartridge or with a Quintet Blue. The latter is a fairly sensible choice on this deck. We did, however, test it with an Ortofon 2M Black (MM) cartridge and an Ortofon Quintet Black S (MC) cartridge. We replaced the mat with a Pro-Ject Leather it leather mat, which is sensitive to static charge.
From the very first measurements, the sound is closer to an X-Tension 9 than to the Pro-Ject X2.
You get the same excellent balance and timbre as the former.
The whole is relatively smooth and sounds very "analogue". But without being dark. Quite the opposite: it offers very fine clarity and excellent transparency. The dynamics and tempo are much better respected and more realistic than with the Pro-Ject X2.
The Pro-Ject X8 Evolution turntable offers very fine musicality and remarkable balance. On top of that, its design and its arm allow many pairings in terms of cartridge and phono preamplifier.

L'excellence analogique
J'ai fait l'acquisition de cette Pro-Ject X8 Evo sans cellule en finition noir laque. Je lui ai monté une cellule ortofon 2M blue et rajouté des supports absorbants pro-ject damp it . La X8 est au coeur d'une installation destinée exclusivement à l'écoute analogique et se compose d'un ampli Yamaha A-S3000 et d'une paire d'enceintes colonnes à haut rendement Klipsch RF-7 mk1 ( première génération 100% américaines ).
Dès les premiers disques, j'ai été impréssionné par le rendu extrèmement précis , détaillé et aéré. La musique prend véritablement vie dans le salon avec une profondeur d'écoute jamais entendue jusqu'à présent. J'ai des disques anciens voire très anciens mais également des disques plus récents voire actuels et dans tous les cas c'est un grand moment musical. Les timbres de voix sont d'une justesse et d'un réalisme saisissant. Ma collection de jazz d'époque est un véritable délice. Sur du rock, il y a un respect de la dynamique incroyable à tel point que si l'on se laisse tenter à pousser davantage le volume.. Le batteur semble jouer devant moi sans parler des solos de guitares électriques. Et le plus important c'est que l'ensemble du spectre est toujours reproduit avec neutralité, sans fatigue auditive quel qu'en soit l'enregistrement. Dans un registre plus classique, j'ai passé un disque de John williams et c'est à tomber tellement c'est majestueux. Les formations orchestrales foisonnent de détails et l'écoute est tellement précise sur les différents plan sonores que l'on peut aisément entendre l'ensemble des instruments. Ce qui est très loin d'être une notion totalement acquise pour un système hifi. J'ai passé un enregistrement purement acoustic d'Eric Clapton et là encore c'est du "live purement live" pour le plus grand plaisir des oreilles.
Je suis chez Pro-ject depuis une quinzaine d'années et auparavant j'ai notamment possédé la Pro-ject début III ( cellule ortofon OM5) , la Pro-ject Xpression III carbon confort semi-auto (cellule ortofon OM10 puis Sumiko Pearl ), la Pro-ject Xpérience Dc acrylic ( cellule ortofon 2M silver puis ortofon Quintet Blue ), la Pro-ject A1 automatique ( cellule OM10), la Pro-ject Début Carbon Evo ( cellule ortofon 2M red puis blue) et enfin cette X8 avec la 2M blue. J'écoute aussi régulièrement la Pro-ject X1 avec cellule Pro-ject pick it installée chez mon frère.
En conclusion, cette X8 Evo ( complétée du reste du système bien évidement ) rend véritablement toutes ses lettres de noblesses au son analogique. A tel point que repasser ensuite sur du support dématérialisé après une telle expérience retire une bonne partie du coté chaleureux et vivant de l'enregistrement; Le son semble alors fade en comparaison.
La X8 restitue un très haut niveau de prestation musicale et permet d'entendre des informations enfouies dans les profondeurs du micro sillon avec une mise en exerbe incroyable. La meilleure platine vinyle qui m'ait été permis d'écouter à ce jour.

Très belle platine en version noyer. Je l'ai upgradé avec une cellule Sumiko blue point N° 3 associée avec un préampli phono Lehmann audio black. Très beau résultat, je voulais un son années 70 avec de la présence, de la chaleur, du relief, de la profondeur, bref une platine vivante. J'ai redécouvert mes vinyles ! Magnifique !

Rien à redire. La platine est superbe avec la cellule Quintet Blue; je suis vraiment satisfait, associée aux câbles phono Pro-Ject Connect It DIN 5P CC et Viard Audio Premium HD et au préampli phono Pro-Ject Tube Box DS2, je trouve le résultat excellent.
L'envoi a été très rapide et soigné.
