Rega Planar 10 turntable

Highly anticipated, RegaFinally releases its new Planar 10 turntable, replacement for the late and legendary RP10.

Rega Planar 10: chassis

For this new one Rega Planar 10, the British manufacturer has completely abandoned the double chassis. It's not a bad thing, because I have always thought that it was made only for hood enthusiasts, and that it made it the most expensive in the world !

It is advantageously replaced, as had been announced by the Rega Planar 8 turntable, with a simple and effective dust cover.

Rega Planar 10: base

The base of the turntable deckHas again been stiffened and lightened in the pure tradition of the philosophy Rega. It is made from an ultra-lightweight Tancast 8 polyurethane foam (a material developed for the aerospace industry).

This material is sandwiched between two layers of HPL (high-pressure laminate). The HPL is exceptionally thin and extremely rigid.

This new construction makes the new "skeletal" base of the Planar 10 30% lighter than that of the original RP10. It offers significantly increased rigidity compared to the previous model.

This baseboard rests on three truncated cones made of elastomer.

Rega Planar 10: specifications

Like the Rega Planar 8, the P10 was inspired by the ultimate turntable from the British manufacturer, the Rega NAIAD. Rather than evolving the previous RP10, the R&D decided to take full inspiration from the NAIAD at a much more affordable price (£30,000!).

According to Roy Gandy, the Planar 10 further reduces the gap between itself and the NAIAD. From materials to the motor, power supply, bearings, sub-platter, and drive belt, which allowed for achieving extreme precision in rotational speed.

We find the superb ceramic platter machined with near-micron precision! The sub-platter receives better machining with a tighter tolerance.

The drive is done via two Rega "High Performance" belts. These minimize drive irregularity as much as possible, and therefore wow and flutter.

Rega Planar 10: motor and power supply

The synchronous motor is powered by 24V via a new TTPSU NEO of "course" !

It uses a new DSP (Digital Signal Processing) generator based on a particularly stable Crystal/Quartz that generates a sinusoidal signal with very low distortion and, above all, at the required frequency with remarkable regularity and precision.

Each power supply receives an individual adjustment made at the factory to align the motor phases, eliminate the last vibrations, and precisely adjust the rotation speeds.

Rega Planar 10: tonearm

La Rega P10 is equipped with the new RB3000 tonearm. This new arm uses new, unique vertical pivots made of ceramic. These offer zero friction, and therefore no noise and remarkable smoothness.

Each arm is hand-polished, which helps minimize weight by eliminating the need for paint.

Rega Planar 10: test and listening

The first thing that surprises is the low distortion and the cleanliness of the signal. The readability is superb and the noise is extremely subdued.

We note a superb separation of instruments and voices. Each instrument is in its place and sounds just right !

The soundstage is superb and very wide. You feel completely immersed in the music. You are with the musicians.

For voice enthusiasts, this Rega P10 is an absolute joy and easily gives you goosebumps.

The energy in the bass is surprising. The impacts of the bass drum or timpani are reproduced with a realism and ease that is disconcerting.

We keep going with the vinyl recordsWithout any hesitation… We are completely immersed in the music, with the performers and at the location of the recording !

With this one Rega Planar 10 turntable, the English brand once again demonstrates its experience and mastery of analog technology.

This vinyl record player is certainly the best designed by Rega to date. It is among the 2 or 3 best "affordable" turntables on the market !
