After the enormous success of its low output MC cartridge, the Apheta, Rega has now released a new version of this bestseller! Franck
It uses all of the same technology developed by the Rega’s hard-working R&D team for the original model, but also boasts lower tolerances and higher end components. The Apheta 2 cartridge's generator consists of a very powerful neodymium magnet and an ultra precise coil. It’s half the size of the original, making it one of the smallest MC cartridge coils in the world! This reduction in size gives the stylus more speed and therefore more freedom to track the vinyl groove. This ensures that even more precision, detail and nuance is extracted from the vinyl.
The body of the Apheta 2 is made entirely of aluminium, ensuring excellent rigidity and neutrality. It also prevents resonance and keeps the overall mass of the cartridge relatively low. The body is protected by a transparent PVC cover which prevents the internal wiring from damage that may be caused by mishandling.
The moving parts consist of an aluminium cantilever and excellent Nude Vital stylus.
We should mention here – and we saw this with our own eyes on our tour of the brand’s factories – that Rega has invested heavily in its cartridge research and development! For example, Roy Gandy has invested in precision cameras and high definition screens, enabling extreme precision and low tolerances in the assembly of the Apheta 2 and the flagship Aphelion cartridge.
And the fruits of this labour can be heard within seconds of listening! This cartridge is less archetypal than other Rega cartridges. Its strong points are its definition, dynamic range and articulation, but these qualities do not come at the expense of timbre or balance. The mids and treble are present and bursting with harmony. The reproduction is full of realism and musicality, in the purest sense of the word. The bass is perfectly executed, but could stand to be more full-bodied. It is articulated and nuanced to the point of excess!
The Rega Apheta 2 MC cartridge is quite clearly an ideal cartridge, and we highly recommend it for use with the REGA RP8 and RP10 vinyl turntables. So if you’re the lucky owner of one of these record players, as well as a phono preamp that is compatible with MC cartridges, The Apheta 2 is the cartridge for you!
