Focal Theva N°3 tower speakers

The new Theva line succeeds the Focal Chora speaker series.

The standout feature of the Theva series revolves around a new speaker and a new slate-colored membrane. This is named by the manufacturer as "Slatefiber."

The Theva series comprises three Hi-Fi speaker models: two floor-standing and one bookshelf. They present a contemporary design quite different from the previous range.

FOCAL THEVA N°3: SLATEFIBER TECHNOLOGY

The Focal Theva N°3 floor-standing speaker is a three-way Bass Reflex design. Both the midrange and woofer speakers feature the new Slatefiber membrane.

The Slatefiber technology, exclusive to Focal, uses non-woven recycled carbon fibers sandwiched between two layers of thermoplastic polymer. These fibers are oriented in the same direction to enhance rigidity and damping. Manufactured in France with sophisticated industrial tools, this lightweight membrane with a "slate" effect provides more damping and rigidity compared to traditional cellulose membranes.

FOCAL THEVA N°3: SPEAKERS

The 16.5 cm midrange driver operates in a sealed enclosure. The three 16.5 cm woofers work in a Bass Reflex configuration, each with an front-firing port and one on the rear of the Focal Theva N°3 floor-standing speaker. All these drivers are equipped with Slatefiber membranes made from recycled carbon fibers.

High frequencies are handled by a new 25 mm TAM tweeter. It features an aluminum/magnesium alloy (Al/Mg) dome with an M-profile. This Focal exclusive offers less directional sound while remaining smooth and precise, with remarkable high-frequency extension up to 30 kHz. A Poron suspension connects the dome to its mount, derived directly from Focal's renowned Utopia Beryllium tweeter. This suspension reduces distortion by three times in the critical zone between 2000 Hz and 3000 Hz. The inverted dome also helps limit directivity and enhances spatialization.

FOCAL THEVA N°3: ENCLOSURE

Like the entire Theva range, the Focal Theva N°3 floor-standing speaker has undergone a complete aesthetic overhaul.

It is covered in synthetic lacquered black finish or simulated light or dark wood veneer.

The speakers are hidden behind a fabric grille with magnetic attachment.

While sizable, this floor-standing speaker remains relatively space-friendly. It stands nearly a meter tall, with a depth of 38 cm and weighs 20 kg! It rests on a base that slightly tilts it backward to optimize speaker phase alignment (Time Alignment).

FOCAL THEVA N°3: INSTALLATION

This floor-standing speaker is best suited for spaces larger than 25 m² to fully appreciate its capabilities. Despite the front-firing port, it should be positioned at least 35 cm away from the wall.

Connection to the amplifier is facilitated by a high-quality terminal that accepts bare wire, banana plugs, or spade connectors.

FOCAL THEVA N°3: TESTING AND LISTENING

The sound reproduction of the Focal Theva N°3 floor-standing speaker is exceptionally balanced and stays true to Focal's DNA. It delivers the neutrality and transparency that have made the French manufacturer's reputation. Instrument timbres are relatively smooth, offering excellent detail. The bass is impressive in its depth, scale, and impact. Though it may not match the articulation and nuance of the Vestia N°2, the reproduction remains physical and very realistic.

The midrange presence and realism resemble those of the Vestia series, perhaps with slightly less transparency. However, the overall sound remains relatively neutral and detailed. The integration of the tweeter with the midrange is seamless, providing excellent clarity and surprising transparency.

The Focal Theva N°3 effortlessly reproduces works with dynamic range and scale.

Overall, the pair of Focal Theva N°3 floor-standing speakers is a significant achievement for the French manufacturer.

They offer superb musicality and precise reproduction while effortlessly filling the room with music! At the price point offered, they appear to have no serious competitors.
