After the interplanetary success of the Elac Miracord 90 turntable, Elac is making a more affordable version of its best seller and is therefore offering the Miracord 70 turntable. The manufacturer’s idea is to offer a vinyl record player of excellent quality, entirely manufactured in Germany and at a price which competitors have trouble competing with.
The Miracord 70 offers a clean finish with a vintage/modern design. The plinth is made out of MDF (medium density fiberboard) covered with an acrylic lacquered finish. The chamfer is plated in a brushed aluminium strip. It looks amazing!
The platter is carved in silica and covered by a ceramic layer. It weighs 2.6 kg which ensures a perfect inertia. Just like on the Miracord 90, it rests on a resin sub-platter cushioned by four sorbothane dampers. The tempered steel axis rotates on a ceramic ball.
The drive principle is made by a synchronous motor via a belt. It is detached from the main chassis by a cushioned turntable by sorbothane joints. It is powered by an external casing to avoid all interferences.
A 9 inch tonearm, made out of aluminium and tempered steel, has been specially designed for this Miracord 70 turntable by the engineers at Elac. It is equipped with a counterweight with a scale and a mechanical antiskating applied by a knob that also has a scale.
The manufacturer offers this turntable mounted with an Audio Technica AT 95e MM cartridge.
The phono cable of this Elac turntable is not captive. There are two plated gold RCA outputs, to which a ground connector is added.
The restitution is in the pure tradition of the German manufacturer. We can find the dynamics and physical aspect of the Miracord 90, with a nice nuance and articulation. Indeed, the balance in the bass and the precision of the soundstage do not reach those of the Miracord 90. However, this small Elac turntable is just as good as its competitors in this price range.
We also believe that its small Audio Technica AT 95 MM cartridge does not favour this turntable. We recommend replacing it by an Ortofon 2M Blue MM cartridge. Indeed, this change was very significant as there was a better timbre balance and a very low surface noise.
The Elac Miracord 70 turntable is a nice success as it combines musicality and excellent manufacturing quality. Its balance is convincing and its restitution is half way between a Clearaudio turntable and a Pro-Ject turntable… It marvelously fills this gap!
Bravo!
