The company was founded in 1926 in Kiel. It initially operated in the search for radio signals in the air and water (radars and sonars). During WWII, Elac had a workforce of over 5,000. In 1945, the brand was requisitioned to produce emergency consumer goods (sewing machines and automotive parts). At the time, there were only 248 employees! Siemens commissioned a small radio, refocusing the company's activity on audio.
In 1948, Elac launched its first turntable, the PW 1. Up until the 70's, the brand was leader in mainstream turntables. Concurrently, it became dealer for Sony, Fisher and Nakamichi in Germany.
The speaker design only appeared in 1984, and more specifically in 1985 with the release of the 4Pi omnidirectional tweeter. They pursued the development of a number of tweeter speakers until the famous 'Jet' ribbon speakers in 2003, still a benchmark to this day. Woofer and midrange speakers followed in 2005. Elac now ranks among the leaders of the world's audio industry.
