Description

The Merason Audio Frerot DAC, despite its compact size, incorporates innovative technology focused on performance and musicality.

DAC MERASON AUDIO FREROT: FRONT PANEL

The front panel, made of natural anodized aluminum, exudes simplicity. In the center lies a selector for 5 inputs, accompanied by a green LED indicating that the signal is "Locked" to the DAC. There is also an LED indicating the device's power status. The enclosure is elegantly designed and impeccably crafted.

DAC MERASON AUDIO FREROT: CONNECTIVITY

Despite its small form factor, the Merason Audio Frerot DAC offers nearly all the connectivity options one would expect from a high-end DAC.

For inputs, there are 2 coaxial SPDIF, 2 optical Toslink, and 1 asynchronous USB B input. Analog outputs include RCA outputs doubled by balanced XLR outputs. Additionally, there's a connection for an external 9V/DC power supply (provided), along with a multi-pin connector for optional use with the Merason Audio Pow1 power supply.

DAC MERASON AUDIO FREROT: TECHNOLOGY

Technically, the Frerot utilizes proven BurrBrown 1794A converters. The analog output amplifiers operate in Class A and are built around discrete components.

Signal processing is entirely symmetrical. Inputs are selected using a high-quality Elma switch, and the analog output signal is symmetrically output through the XLR connectors and asymmetrically through the RCA connectors. The Merason Audio Frerot processes PCM data up to 24 bits / 192 kHz. It shares technology with its acclaimed predecessor, the Merason DAC1.

DAC MERASON AUDIO FREROT: SOUND QUALITY

We connected the Merason Audio Frerot to our Octavio Stream network player via optical Toslink, often using Qobuz HD.

The sound reproduction distinctly favors an "analog" presentation, emphasizing tonality, texture, and presence.

The Frerot brilliantly reproduces the ambiance and spatial separation between instruments.

Merason's technical choices seem aimed at conveying the emotional intensity of the music without sacrificing detail or precision. The Frerot is detailed and precise, yet it maintains a sense of emotion and realism.

If you're in search of a standalone digital-to-analog converter that offers undeniable musicality at its price point, the Merason Audio Frerot is undoubtedly a top choice.

It offers an excellent balance of quality, musicality, and price.
