The brand Focal has a highly prized place in the world of monitoring speakers. In few years, the French manufacturer has become a global reference in mastering and monitoring speakers design.
The Alpha series is the most affordable range of the French manufacturer. It has established itself as one of the references in affordable active speakers. In spite of their democratic prices, the Focal Alpha speakers take the innovations of the brand, developed on the most prestigious models.
The Alpha 65 active monitoring speaker is the middle model of the range that counts 3 models: Alpha 50, Alpha 65 and Alpha 80.
FOCAL ALPHA 65: CHARACTERISTICS
It is equipped with a bass/midrange speaker of 16.5 cm with Polyglass membrane. This one is load with a large section dual laminar port.
The high frequencies are entrusted to an inverted dome 25 mm (1’’) tweeter made of aluminium.
Each register is "driven" by its own amplifier: a 35 W class AB module for the tweeter, and a 70 W module for the woofer.
Despite its size, the Alpha 65 offers a frequency response from 40 Hz to 22 kHz (+/- 3 dB)!
FOCAL ALPHA 65: BACK
At the back of the Alpha 65 speaker, we find a XLR symmetrical input and a RCA asymmetrical input. The sensitivity is adjustable by 0 and + 6 dB.
Two potentiometers allow you to adjust the bass and high notes level following the room and the position of the speaker, to have the most neutral and accurate response as possible.
FOCAL ALPHA 65: TEST AND LISTENING
Since the very first notes, we are surprised by the dynamic, fullness and bass articulation of this active speaker.
The most impressive bass drums and bass synths are reproduced with excellent impact and cleanness.
The definition and transparency are far above what we could expect from a product at this price.
The overall restitution is impressive by its timing and timbre quality. The balance of this Alpha 65 is remarkable. The neutrality and signal cleanness make it a true work tool.
In addition, I am surprised by its low directivity and the fullness of its sound stage, even on proximity listening.
Honestly, the Focal Alpha 65 active speaker delighted me and I put a pair of them in my "home studio"! It goes much further and is more musical than my former monitoring pair, yet two and a half times more expensive.
In my opinion, the Focal Alpha 65 is unrivalled at this price! Our favorite! Franck
