Rotel is a Japanese firm that was founded in 1963 by Tomiko Tachikawa. The company is now run by his son.
The company began operating in the late 50s under the name Roland Electronics, as a TV manufacturer working for Sylvania on the Japanese market. In the 60s, Rotel focused on audio products and manufactured products for US Hi-Fi companies like Harman Kardon, Marantz and Scott. In 1971, following the merger of Ro(land Electronics) with US distributor (Mar)tel, the brand got its definitive name 'ROTEL'. Most research and design studies are based in the UK, while production is done in the manufacturer's facility north of Hong Kong.
The brand is famous for developing highly reliable power supply units with toroid transformers.
