The 5 best vinyl records in the history of Record Store Day

Vinyles du Disquaire Day

Record Store Day 2018 is coming soon, and to properly celebrate this, the WaxBuyersClub came to maPlatine to offer some of its exclusive vinyl records. For this reason, Edouard of the WaxBuyersClub took the advantage to explain to us in more details what is Record Store Day and to show you the mythical vinyl records of the previous editions of Record Store Day.

By the way, what is Record Store Day?

It is the celebration of independent record dealers and enthusiasts of vinyl records! Like many things, it is an event that started in the United-States in 2008, under the name of Record Store Day. It is only in 2011 with the CALIF (Action Club of Independent French Labels in English) that everything started in France.

Vinyl records stored in a box

Record Store Day is essential in order to give an important visibility to independent record dealers. It has also participated in increasing the statistics in the number of sales of vinyl records these past few years. However, everyone wanted to get a small slice of pie and the celebration is partly ruined by commercial operations of large distributors of vinyl records but also by a surreal multiplication of the number of “exclusives” that come out on that day.

Edouard has therefore selected for you 5 vinyl records of previous editions of Record Store Day that are truly worth the detour. It does not necessarily involve the most famous records, but they are definitely vinyl records that still make the detour at Record Store Day worth it.

The 5 best vinyl records in the history of Record Store Day according to the WaxBuyers club

1. THELONIOUS MONK – LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES 1960 – RSD 2017 – BOX SET 2LP

It is not the most rare, nor the most expensive. For the 2017 edition, 5000 copies of this box set of 2 vinyls were released. The masters of this record were found by Sam Records. They are unreleased recordings accompanied with a booklet of 60 pages. The pressing was realized by Pallas in Germany, maybe the best press in the world. It is made for all fans of jazz and others as well.

2. THE WHITE STRIPES – ELEPHANT – RSP 2013 – DOUBLE LP

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the album, Jack white and Third Man Records (TMR) re released this vinyl on White and Black/Red vinyl (split color). Record Store Day 2013 was the year during which Jack White was the ambassador of Record Store Day. In the style of TMR, it is indicated that this vinyl is full analogue, from recording to pressing. Far from being rare (we do not know the number of copies released, certainly around 10,000), it is a symbol of Record Store Day but also a great album.

3. MORIARTY + IRSHAD & NISHA ALI KAWA – DIAMONDS NEVER DIE / LITTLE SADIE – RSD 2015 – 7″

Do you know the principle of the Unik sessions of Adami and France Inter? Its absolutely great. A live recording of an established artist, accompanied by an up and coming artist directly taken from the vinyl acetate. 200 copies were released for the 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 editions (we do not know yet for 2018). The result? It is fantastic. You can find every Unik sessions on Discogs. Why this record and not another? Simply because it is the only one that is missing from my collection!

4. LCD SOUND SYSTEM – THE LONG GOODBYE : LCD SOUNDSYSTEM LIVE AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN – RSD 2014 – BOXSET 5LP

When LCD announced that he was retiring and that for this occasion he was doing his last concert, it was a shock (we now know that his retirement was not a retirement… whew!). Quick reminder: James Murphy of LCD is originally a sound engineer and drummer. He is also a fan of vinyl records. The result of a concert that we think is the last and James Murphy’s passion for music gives birth to a box set of 5 vinyls that will blow you away.

The sound is fantastic, the object is magnificent, and if you wish to listen to this concert without any sound interruption, it is possible! Indeed, the 5 vinyls are “unabridged”. This means that the sides that follow each other are not on the same record (A-C, B-D… etc.). Ok, you need 5 hours ahead of you and 2 turntables with a mixing deck. But knowing the fact that you can do it! It is possible to find this box set, but it is expensive. There are only 3000 copies in circulation.

5. HENRI TEXIER REMIXÉ PAR BONOBO – LES LÀ-BAS – RSD 2016 – 12″

Everyone knows this track by Henri Texier, as well as the remix by Bonobo. Well, on this 12” EP, you have the first on side B and the second on side A! Unlike the 4 other references listed above, you will easily find it second-hand and certainly at a lower price to its selling price on April 16th 2016. Who said that good records where necessarily expensive?
