Building your Hi-Fi system: interview with Elwood, employee of maPlatine.com

Le système Hi-Fi d'Elwood

In this new interview, our young technician Elwood passionately talks about his Hi-Fi system , under permanent upgrade! Système HiFi Elwood

Elwood, what does your Hi-Fi system consist of?

I play my vinyl records on my old customised Planar 3 from the 90’s. The RB300 tonearm proudly accommodates a Rega Carbon carbon that works wonders! I use a Sansui integrated amp, an au-317 mk II that has a great phono stage. The system is connected to Monitor Audio’s BX-1 speakers that are truly amazing! When I really want to cut myself off from the outside world, I connect my Grado SR60e headphones, a model I find incredible for the price, with an amazingly accurate sound reproduction.

What guided you in your choices?

I mainly listen to rhythm’n’blues, soul and rock from the sixties, so I opted for Rega for my turntable and immediately fell for the distinctive sound of this British brand! The dynamics are immediately perceptible on a high tempo, the bass is well articulated and the mids are really warm! Once I had connected the vinyl turntable to my amp, I soon felt the urge to use it with new speakers, so it wasn’t long before I opted for the BX-1! The potential of my stereo system was increased tenfold once the speakers were fully broken in, it was pure bliss…

What main steps did the building process include?

I already had a Hi-Fi amp with a phono stage, a direct-drive BST turntable and old second-hand speakers. When I first took to Hi-Fi sound reproduction, I immediately opted for a Rega turntable, because it is the source of my stereo system and it is naturally the main element for which no expense should be spared! Are you happy with the sonic performance and why?

Yes, because it all makes sense, I was able to rediscover my entire vinyl collection, and I’ve only just started!

What plans do you have in terms of upgrades?

I’ve had my views on it for a long time… I think that the best way to increase the reproduction level of my stereo system would be to buy a Pro-Ject Tube Box S. This phono preamp is an entry-level model, but I think it is in a different league altogether because of its electronic tubes! This centrepiece of analogue electronics will be the cornerstone of my future system! Interview Elwood
