The new Atoll AM300 Evolution power amplifier is directly derived from the Atoll IN300 EVO integrated amplifier. It inherits both its power stage and its power supply.
ATOLL AM300 EVOLUTION: FRONT PANEL
The Atoll AM300 EVO power amplifier features the brand’s signature design, also found in the Signature range.
At the center of the 8 mm brushed aluminum front panel sits the manufacturer’s logo, engraved directly into the metal (available in natural or black finish). In addition, there are only three small LEDs: one indicating power-on (activated from the rear of the unit), one for the XLR connection, and the last showing whether the amplifier is bridged in mono mode.
ATOLL AM300 EVOLUTION: REAR PANEL
On the back of the Atoll AM300 EVO, you’ll find the speaker outputs on either side. These terminals are custom-made for Atoll from high-quality copper. They accept both banana plugs and spade connectors. Bare wire connections are, of course, not recommended for this class of device.
Atoll provides both unbalanced stereo RCA inputs and balanced stereo XLR inputs. The XLR inputs must be activated by a push button on the back panel. Another push button allows switching from stereo to mono (bridged) mode.
There is also a stereo RCA output that can, for example, be used to feed a subwoofer. The unit also comes standard with a 12V trigger input for automatic power-on when connected to a preamplifier.
ATOLL AM300 EVO: SPECIFICATIONS
The internal architecture is clearly impressive!
The Atoll AM300 EVO is a fully dual-mono design. It’s powered by two toroidal transformers rated at 440 VA each, plus an additional 5 VA transformer for control logic.
Filtering is handled by twelve audio-grade electrolytic capacitors, providing a total capacity of over 83,600 μF! The power stage uses a triple push-pull MOS-FET configuration.
And the numbers speak for themselves! Power output is 150 W per channel into 8 ohms, and it rises to 280 W per channel into 4 ohms! In bridged mono mode, using two AM300 units delivers 500 W per channel into 8 ohms!
It’s worth noting that the output stages operate in Class A/B bias, with Class A operation up to 30% of the total power.
The internal speaker wiring is also made with high-end speaker cables.
ATOLL AM300 EVO: TEST AND LISTENING IMPRESSIONS
The AM300 EVO is suitable for most high-end Hi-Fi or home theater applications. It can be used alone, in bi-amplification setups, or paired with an Atoll integrated amplifier or preamplifier—or any other high-quality preamp. It can also be bridged into mono if required.
This power amplifier drives the vast majority of speakers with ease and authority.
It delivers tight, dynamic, and articulate bass, a midrange that is transparent and neutral, and highs that are precise, subtle, and pleasantly smooth.
The soundstage is highly holographic, offering striking realism and presence.
The Atoll AM300 EVOLUTION is truly an iron fist in a velvet glove — it maintains total control over the loudspeakers, allowing for high listening levels while remaining subtle and nuanced. A superb achievement from the French manufacturer!
At its price point, it has no real competitor. Paired with the Atoll PR300 EVO, the two form a formidable duo.
