The Gold Note PH-5.2 is an evolution of the renowned PH-5 from the Italian manufacturer. It remains the entry model in Gold Note’s phono preamplifier range, designed to deliver—at an accessible price—the quality and performance that made the Gold Note PH-10 famous.
The PH-5.2 incorporates most of the technical features that distinguish the PH-10 from its competitors, offering a truly high-end phono stage experience at a more affordable level.
Gold Note PH-5.2 – Front Panel and Rear Connections
This phono preamplifier features a number of distinctive design elements.
It comes in a compact “shoebox” half-width chassis, now made from sand-blasted and black anodized aluminum. This new enclosure represents the most significant performance improvement over the previous version.
Aluminum has extremely low interaction with magnetic fields, providing a cleaner electrical and mechanical environment that enhances micro-detail retrieval.
On the front panel, the PH-5.2 features a beautiful and intuitive touchscreen display. Users can select the cartridge type (MM or MC), gain, load impedance and equalization curve directly from the screen.
The PH-5.2 introduces a redesigned interface, making adjustments faster, clearer and more intuitive.
The rear panel includes:
One RCA phono input
RCA outputs, duplicated by balanced XLR outputs
A multi-pin connector for the optional external power supply
An IEC power inlet
A Micro-USB port for firmware updates
Gold Note PH-5.2 – Adjustments and Features
The Gold Note PH-5.2 is an extremely versatile phono preamplifier, offering the functionality of a true high-end model.
MM and MC gain settings (40 dB / 60 dB, with ±3 dB and +6 dB options), combined with multiple loading options (10, 22, 47, 100, 220, 470, 1k, 22k and 47k ohms), allow compatibility with a wide range of high- and low-output cartridges.
The PH-5.2 also lets users select the most appropriate equalization curve for each record:
RIAA
DECCA London
American Columbia
Each curve is clearly displayed as a graph on the screen. Every equalization can be enhanced by a proprietary design derived from the Georg Neumann system, optimizing dynamics and high-frequency response up to 50 kHz.
It should be noted that approximately 95% of records use the RIAA curve. Other curves mainly apply to pressings made before 1958, although some rare labels continued using Decca or Columbia curves into the late 1960s.
Thanks to its technical capabilities, the PH-5.2 can be paired with most low- and high-output MC cartridges, as well as all MM cartridges on the market.
Gold Note PH-5.2 – Power Supply
To further improve performance, Gold Note has optimized the internal power supply of the PH-5.2, providing increased stability and higher current capacity under real-world operating conditions.
In addition, Gold Note has developed an optional external power supply that elevates the PH-5.2 to an entirely different performance class. This external PSU allows the PH-5.2 to reach its full potential.
Gold Note PH-5.2 – Listening Test
From the very first notes, the Gold Note PH-5.2 delivers a highly detailed sound reproduction with beautiful tonal richness.
The smooth, silky treble characteristic of the Gold Note PH-10 is clearly present.
The soundstage is wide and engaging, slightly less expansive than its bigger sibling but still extremely stable, precise and well-defined.
Voices and string instruments benefit from excellent presence and realism. While overall dynamics are marginally behind the PH-10, they remain superior to all competitors in this price range.
With MC gain reaching up to 66 dB, the PH-5.2 can comfortably drive low-output MC cartridges down to 0.3 mV. Outstanding results were achieved with cartridges such as the Hana SL, Audio-Technica AT-OC9XSH and Ortofon X40.
The Gold Note PH-5.2 may not be the best phono preamplifier in the world, but at its price point, it has no real musical or technical competition. It is undoubtedly one of the most versatile phono stages in its category.
Moreover, it can later be upgraded with the optional Gold Note PSU-5.2 external power supply, transforming it into a true high-performance machine.

Après une semaine d'écoute je ne peux que me réjouir des conseils de Franck.
Clarté, précision , scène sonore fabuleuse.
Des graves splendides bien tendus, des aigus filés sans exagération, une gamme de médiums très propre.
Ce préampli va dans le sens de mon système et de mon goût sans jamais trahir une écoute que j'aime légèrement chaude.
Pour info: Rega 3 de 1985, naim 152, naim 155, naim flatcap, ortofon 2m blue, Pierre Étienne Leon Kantor S2.
Bref une première étape déterminante parfaitement réussie dans l'amélioration de ma partie analogique.

PH-5 + PSU-5
Deuxième avis suite à l'adjonction de l'alimentation dédiée PSU-5.
On rentre dans une autre catégorie avec l'alimentation séparée, bien meilleure stéréo, placement des instruments parfait, les basses (après un bon rodage d'un mois) sont bien tendues et on entend les différentes articulations.
Le point qui m'a plus bluffé est cette facilité à faire sonner tout juste et à un niveau correct. Aucune fréquence n'est "sur-amplifiée", tout est à sa place et garde un souci permanent de douceur.
À titre de comparaison, je trouve qu'on se situe dans les mêmes performances qu'un Vida Prima, sauf le PH-5+PSU5 est moins lumineux dans le haut du spectre.
Rapport Qualité-Prix imbattable
Après plusieurs mois de recherche d'un préampli se marriant bien avec mon système (rega brio + enceintes mulidine allegretto v4 + rega rp3/hana sl), j'ai trouvé dans ce préampli tout ce que je cherchais (et bien plus encore :) ) .
Pour comparaison, j'ai eu le pro-ject tube box et le tube box ds2 ainsi qu'un vida prima. À mon humble avis, le PH5 se situe bien au-dessus des pro-ject, sans pour autant égaler les détails et les transitoires d'un vida prima.
Au niveau du son, ce PH5 délivre un son très très immersif, un des plus beau médium que j'ai pu entendre (et que je préfère à celui du vida prima), des aigus détaillés et soyeux (qui ne cassent pas la tête après 1 heure d'écoute) et de très bonne basses même si je trouve qu'on peut faire un peu mieux sur ce registre.
La qualité première de cet ampli est d'apporter une très grande dynamique tout en conservant ce son en trois dimensions, précis, articulé et très soyeux. Le son a ce grain qu'on pourrait qualifier de légèrement coloré mais pourtant jamais redondant !
Mécaniquement bien construit, on entend les relais "claquer" à chaque changement de réglage. On peut aussi totalement éteindre l'écran ce qui rend l'appareil très discret avec sa fine lumière bleu.
Entre la pléthore de réglages (inédit dans cette gamme de prix ?), les nombreuses sorties (rca et xlr !) et la possibilité de lui adjoindre une alimentation dans le futur, c'est un appareil que je recommende chaudement.
