The NAGAOKA MP110 is the most recent manifestation of the MP100, which is widely regarded as one of the best affordable cartridges affordable cartridges on the market.
It has a fairly vintage design, which is positive in this case. It looks like a Lego. The presentation and design are very high quality and are on par with competitor products. Nagaoka uses excellent Samarium/Cobalt magnets and high purity copper coils. The elliptical stylus is mounted onto an aluminium cantilever. The stylus is naturally interchangeable. The comfortable output level makes it compatible with most MM phono preamps or phono inputs generally available on built-in amps. The combination of its high compliance (20) and low mass (6.5g) means that it is also compatible with many different tonearm models (Thorens, Dual, Lenco, Garrard, Pro-Ject, etc.).
It boasts all the qualities of the MP100, without any of the flaws. The top end of the spectrum is detailed and clear, without any artificial brightness or harshness. The bass is slightly limited but very well articulated and more dynamic than the MP100. The response is relatively flat, without any unsightly peaks or dips. The mids are present and gentle, reproducing vocals with realism and without a hint of harshness. It delivers better transparency and precision than the MP100, as well as reduced surface noise. At this price, the MP100 is a bargain option for anyone looking for musicality and texture, or if you’re just feeling nostalgic for the golden days of Shure and Audio Technica!
