Description

Audiophiles often love unpacking turntables, they see it as a pleasant small ritual… well setting up a JR Transrotor turntable is no exception!

TRANSROTOR DARKSTAR: CHASSIS

The Darkstar uses no suspension or damping system. Just like the other models, Transrotor relies on a combination of mass technology as well as dense and neutral materials. The chassis and platter of the Darkstar are made of POM, also known as Polyoxymethylene for the chemists, and Delrin, the Dupont registered trademark for the rest of us.

This resin combines many of the properties of metals and plastics, including strength, rigidity and resistance to impact, moisture and temperature. Its damping and anti-vibration abilities are similar to acrylic.

Contrary to what might be thought, the Darkstar rests on three feet. The motor and tonearm bases are suspended and not in contact with the turntable stand.

TRANSROTOR DARKSTAR: PLATTER AND DRIVE PRINCIPLE

The platter undergoes special treatment to reduce vibration and resonance stemming from the drive system. It is visible on the underside of the platter and features concentric ribbing. Its weight and design result in great inertia. The drive principle is quite standard. It comprises a belt and an AC synchronous motor.

As with most high-end turntables, there is no sub-platter and the belt just slips around the edge of the platter. The stainless-steel drive spindle rests on a brass housing. The bearing is a ceramic ball-bearing.

The Darkstar is delivered as standard with the Konstant Eins power supply.

TRANSROTOR DARKSTAR: TONEARM, CARTRIDGE AND PHONO CABLE

The Transrotor Darkstar turntable is supplied with a high-end Rega RB880 tonearm. It was modified and optimised to adapt to the characteristics of the turntable as well as Transrotor’s requirements. It’s an aluminium tonearm with a 9” effective length. As always with Rega, the phono cable is captive. Our tests proved that the quality is excellent with most entry level and mid-range MM as well as MC cartridges.

The Transrotor Darkstar is equipped as standard with an Uccello MM cartridge, which is very similar to the Goldring 1022GX MM cartridge.

TRANSROTOR DARKSTAR: TESTING AND LISTENING

As with many rigid turntable models, setting up this model is really easy. Position the chassis and compensate for level using the front towers, position the motor, platter and belt and you're done! Start the music!

Don't let the appearance of this JR Transrotor fool you! The musicality is far from being dull and “dark”! It’s the complete opposite! It delivers a vibrant sound with a lot of substance. It picks up transient cues very quickly and clearly. You simply can’t get bored with the Darkstar! The level of detail and transparency deliver the recording and mixing with great authenticity. The timbres are very authentic and rich. The noise level is almost inaudible. The overall neutrality makes this turntable readily compatible with many MM and MC cartridges as well as phono preamplifiers.

The JR Transrotor Darkstar turntable is outstanding on all fronts: manufacture, musicality, versatility… It’s definitely a great deal with exceptional value for money. Would recommend!

Superbe
