Since 2003, with its high-end M1 turntable, the manufacturer Musical Fidelity had not offered an analog source since then. It is back today with a much more modest and accessible product, the Roundtable S turntable.
MUSICAL FIDELITY ROUNDTABLE S: Plinth
This new turntable is offered in uncommon dimensions, which makes it original at first sight. It is offered in 3 lacquered finishes: red, black and white.
Specific stands ensure a perfect insulation with the support.
The phono cable is detachable and can be replaced by a more powerful model in time.
MUSICAL FIDELITY ROUNDTABLE S: DRIVE
The motor drives a medium plate by means of a peripheral belt. It offers high density, high mass and low resonance.
The spindle/bearing uses a high-carbon steel bearing. It does occur a lot of friction and so has an exceptional lifetime.
MUSICAL FIDELITY ROUNDTABLE S: TONEARM AND PHONO CARTRIDGE
Musical Fidelity opted for a 9” aluminium tonearm. This tonearm is equipped with precision bearing made of steel/zirconium. The horizontal ones are ABEC7 ball bearings.
Antiskating is magnetically controlled thanks to a lateral graduated knob.
Its 14g effective mass allows it to be associated to several phono cartridges. As standard, it is offered with the Ortofon 2M Red MM cartridge. However, with the provided counterweight, you can add cartridges with a mass between 5 and 13g, and its VTA setting allows a wide choice.
MUSICAL FIDELITY ROUNDTABLE S: TEST AND LISTENING
With this Musical Fidelity Roundtable S, the restitution is more precise and structured than the other vinyl turntables of this range.
The dynamic is quite surprising, mostly on the bass where we can feel its physical and very articulated side.
In the future, it can be interesting to upgrade the cartridge. The test with a “small” Ortofon Quintet Red MC cartridge has been positive, bluffing. This turntable allows, at minimal cost, the use of low output MC cartridges with surprising results.
This Musical Fidelity Roundtable S turntable certainly doesn't revolutionize the analogue world.
However, at this price, the Roundtable S offers an excellent musicality and many upgrades for a product of this range. This is thanks to its high-performance tonearm, which offers all the necessary settings to combine a high-end phono cartridge.
