The Thorens TD 201 turntable is a new product that really differs from the previous models offered by the manufacturer.
THORENS TD 201: PLINTH
The plinth is made of black-lacquered medium of a nice finish.
It rests over 4 damped stands which give it stability.
THORENS TD 201: DRIVE AND PLATTER
This new TD 201 production is fully manual, it is an excellent choice and still offers 33/45t rpm speeds. Traditionally, the platter is driven by belt.
The platter of 30cm diameter is made of cast aluminium. It is covered with a platter mat made of strong rubber.
THORENS TD 201: TONEARM AND PHONO CARTRIDGE
This vinyl turntable is equipped with a new Thorens TP 71 tonearm of 8.8 inches. It has the particularity to have a removable headshell, even if this one seems limited because it is not universal and cannot be replaced by an Ortofon or SME standard headshell.
Thorens decided to associate this TD 201 to an Audio Technica AT 3600 MM cartridge. This cartridge remains democratic and can be replaced by a higher range phono cartridge in time.
THORENS TD 201: PHONO PREAMPLIFIER AND PHONO CABLE
The Thorens TD 201 is equipped with a switchable MM phono preamplifier. It allows you to connect the TD 201 to all amplifier or receiver, even if it does not have a specific phono input.
The phono cable is not captive and can be replaced by a more powerful model in the future.
THORENS TD 201: TEST AND LISTENING
The implementation and the use of this TD 201 turntable are simple.
The restitution is both dynamic and lively! The timbres are elegant and favor the matter to the precision. The midrange is very typical of analogue.
The voices are present and very open.
We also find this fullness over the strings and brass. The bass is generous with less strength and precision than other competitive models. However, it hugely contributes to the fullness of the whole.
There are no aggressiveness or hardness to report! On the contrary, the high notes are perfectly integrated to the other registers.
This new Thorens TD 201 turntable is an excellent surprise. The musicality, associated to a realistic price, make it a good choice. It can also be upgraded to “boost” its performances.
