Description

This Dynavector DV 10X5 MKII MC cartridge is the successor of a dynasty born in 1978. Immediately after the release, it received the very popular “Engineering Award” of the CES in Chicago (that’s right, it wasn’t taking place in Las Vegas back then!) and the MKII received it again in 1981.

It’s provided with the red body which has always been a feature of the 10X series for more than forty years.

The great novelty, however, is its low-level version offered as of today, hence the addition of the “L” standing for Low!

DYNAVECTOR DV 10X5 MKII LOW: TECHNOLOGY

The design is based on the patented “Flux damper & Softened Magnetism.”

The wiring was reduced to limit the weight of the moving system as well. Thus, the output level was naturally reduced to 0.5 mV, and the internal impedance reached an appropriate level below 35 ohms. However, in order to maintain a high output level (for a low output MC), the generator was equipped with powerful neodymium magnets.

Of course, it needs to be associated with an excellent MC phono preamplifier having a minimum load of 100 ohms and a 60 dB gain. It’s also possible to pair it with an excellent MM phono preamplifier by using a step-up transformer.

The Dynavector DV 10X5 MKII Low is equipped with the excellent Nude Shibata Line Contact stylus mounted on a hardened aluminium cantilever. These features ensure precise tracking capability, even on tortuous grooves, while providing wide response in high frequencies and better resolution.

DYNAVECTOR DV 10X5 MKII LOW: TESTING AND LISTENING

The setup is fairly easy due to the thread present in the aluminium body. We associated it with a Rega P8 turntable (Discover the Rega Planar 8 turntable) and an Aurorasound Vida Prima phono preamplifier.

Like many high-end cartridges, this 10X5 MKII Low requires several dozens of hours of run-in before it can offer its full potential. You will need 30 hours at least, but optimum quality will appear after 50 hours.

From the first few measures, we are stunned by the dynamics and the tempo provided to the music. This DV 10X5 MKII L will keep amazing you, no matter the musical style. There are also a superb soundstage and a surprising openness.

We can perfectly identify the musicians between the speakers and even beyond.
Timbres are marvellous and seem even richer and more realistic than on the high output version. We also notice that this Low version is more nuanced and subtle, while providing better dynamics on transients. It offers deep and perfectly articulated lower frequencies. The upper mid-range is present while being detailed and subtle. It provides lots of realism to the reproduction, without being overbearing.

This DV 10X5 MKII low output version has won us over! We were waiting for Dynavector to go in this direction for several years now, just like lots of Japanese manufacturers had done (Sumiko, Hana).

It’s a real success which is proposed still at a reasonable price.

A favourite!

For those who only possess an MM phono preamplifier, Dynavector still offers the high output version, the Dynavector DV 10X5 MKII high output MC cartridge.

Sublime
