Sonus Faber Lumina V tower speakers

Since 1983, Sonus Faber has been offering high-end, high-performance speakers that have captivated many music lovers and garnered significant attention in the specialized press. The brand is renowned, among other things, for its Homage, Olympica Nova, and recently Sonetto series.

With the Lumina series, the Italian brand now offers a new "democratic" range that meets the needs and requirements of budget-conscious music enthusiasts. Currently, the Lumina range consists of only 4 Hi-Fi products: two bookshelf speakers and two floorstanding speakers.

The most advanced model in the range is the Lumina V floorstanding speaker. It features a 3-way/4-driver configuration, consistent with the manufacturer's offerings in higher-end ranges.

SONUS FABER LUMINA V: MANUFACTURE AND DESIGN

Upon unpacking, the Sonus Faber Lumina V floorstanding speakers reveal a craftsmanship using refined materials in the noblest sense. The design is intentionally minimalist, highlighting the quality of the materials used.

The front panel is crafted from multi-layered genuine wood, available in a choice of 3 finishes: gloss black, wenge, or walnut. The drivers can be concealed behind a rigid black jersey fabric grille with magnetic fastenings.

The cabinet is exceptionally rigid, and its weight (> 22 kg) attests to its quality.

These floorstanding speakers are handcrafted at Sonus Faber's factory in Arcugnano, Italy.

SONUS FABER LUMINA V: SPEAKERS

High frequencies are handled by the excellent 29mm DKM fabric dome tweeter. To minimize distortions and disturbances in the high frequencies, this tweeter is isolated from the speaker cabinet by a viscoelastic joint. It is paired in the midrange with a 150mm cellulose fiber driver, identical to the model used in the Sonetto range.

The two 165mm bass drivers are specific to the Lumina range and have been designed specifically for this Hi-Fi speaker. They feature a powerful motor that allows the drivers to reach very low frequencies without trailing (38Hz).

The Bass Reflex port is located at the bottom of the floorstanding speaker, making its placement less critical in relation to the rear and side walls. Although placement relative to the floor may still be somewhat critical, this seems less so according to the manufacturer.

SONUS FABER LUMINA V: INSTALLATION

The Lumina V is a relatively large speaker but remains relatively easy to place. It requires a listening room with a surface area of over 30 m².

Connection is made via a high-quality dual binding post that accepts banana plugs, spades, or bare wire.

SONUS FABER LUMINA V: TESTING AND LISTENING

We paired the Sonus Faber Lumina V floorstanding speakers with a capable amplifier delivering around 100 watts, specifically the Musical Fidelity MS5 si integrated amplifier. They require power to deliver deep, dynamic, and controlled bass.

The soundstage is expansive and open. The Lumina V effortlessly fills the room without needing high volume levels. At higher volumes, they deliver muscular and well-controlled sound. Sonus Faber has not attempted to exaggerate the qualities of the Lumina V or make them overly demonstrative. On the contrary, they remain very realistic, excelling in what they do.

Well-driven, the Sonus Faber Lumina V floorstanding speakers offer excellent rhythmic precision and particularly communicative "swing."

As always with Sonus Faber, the primary strengths lie in tonal quality and a finely balanced sound that enhances musicality. These are not speakers that artificially boost decibels; instead, they excel in transparency and offer remarkable definition across the entire spectrum.
