The Diva II turntableis the second model developed by British manufacturer AVID. It departs from the Ingenium turntable by its plinth, that is no longer assembled but cast! Indeed, it is made of one piece of aluminium with damping. It has amazing rigidity and neutrality thanks to its design and structure.
The structure rests on 3 posts damped by a TPE layer, unlike the suspension on the manufacturer's more ambitious models. The bearing housing and bearing take place of pride at the centre of the plinth. They are built with great precision and generate zero friction. The bearing is made of carbide/sapphire and is lubricated as standard. The sub-platter is driven with amazing smoothness. It is rotated via a belt driven by a synchronous motor. It is housed in a steel casing that offers great stability and wards off any vibration. Rare feature for this price range, the motor has a separate power supply. It comprises a good power supply that delivers a clean and powerful current. It enables a stable and smooth motor rotation. The MDF platter is covered with a layer of cork used as a platter mat and thus damping. The central spindle is threaded and accommodates the great AVID clamp (supplied)! It minimises surface vibrations, hence delivering a more precise playback.
In this version, we have opted for the famous SME 2.9 tonearm. It makes a great addition to this turntable, keeping the total budget reasonable. This tonearm boasts a meticulous build quality with all the useful features. It is a 9-inch (233.20 mm) stainless steel model, with a cast magnesium headshell. It is detachable and offers azimuth adjustment. The counterweight is made of tungsten. It boasts great rigidity and the ball bearings have great precision. It is compatible with many MM and MC cartridges. The phono cable that comes with it is detachable and can therefore be replaced with a better model.
Despite its competitive price, the Diva II turntable features uncompromising manufacturing and design qualities.
We paired it with AVID's Diva II turntable an MC cartridge with medium mass and compliance. From the opening bars, it is clear that the playback is neutral. The silence and low mechanical noise leave room for micro-details. The dynamics are perfect, especially in the bass register, where the notes are always clear and well articulated. This register never gets into the way of the mids. It is actually quite amazing. The instruments are perfectly separated and in their place. The sound of the strings, brass and vocal sections is highly authentic and achieves a rare level of fidelity! This tonearm and turntable combo delivers a perfectly balanced playback. We would possibly not have had such results with other tonearms…
This AVID Diva II turntable is both pleasant to look at and to listen to! We view it as a benchmark in the range… 100% made in the UK! AVID and SME, the winning combo! Also, it can eventually be upgraded to a Diva II SP turntable.
A safe buy that we can only recommend!
