This new 2-Xperience SB DC turntable is an upgrade to the 2-Xperience Classic. It builds on its main features, with a few dramatic changes.
Pro-Ject 2-Xperience SB DC : Plinth and platter
It features a thick MDF base with a varnished or glossy veneer, depending on the finish.
It rests on three cone-shaped feet that combine a TPE and aluminium sandwich.
The 2 kg platter is made up of MDF with a 4 mm coat of compressed vinyl. It is rectified with precision and turns perfectly true.
The top spindle is threaded to accommodate the aluminium Record Clamp (supplied). It holds the record firmly against the platter, making for a flatter surface, leading to great inertia.
Pro-Ject 2-Xperience SB DC : Motor and drive
The motor is a new silent model that generates very little vibration.
To minimise vibration on the plinth, it is suspended with a silicone ring.
It is powered by an outboard DC transformer.
An electronic circuit recreates a stable alternating current (50 Hz), fully insensitive to voltage fluctuations. It is combined with a variable speed drive. The two oscillators allow for the speed to be changed electronically via a logic button. Two LEDS show the active playback speeds (33 and 45 RPM).
Pro-Ject 2-Xperience SB DC : Tonearm and cartridge
It features the latest 9" tonearm designed by the manufacturer. It is a variant of the Evolution made out of a block of carbon.
The bearings (ABEC 7) are crafted with great precision.
Like all of Pro-Ject's tonearms, the anti-skating device is a small weight suspended to a nylon thread: a simple yet highly efficient solution.
The tonearm of this turntable can hold cartridges between 8 and 15 g. And to top it all, the 2Xperience Acryl SB DC turntable comes with a great moving magnet cartridge: Ortofon's 2M Silver
Pro-Ject 2-Xperience SB DC : Phono cable and accessories
The tonearm leads are not captive and so the standard cables can easily be replaced by higher quality models, such as 'Connect it ' cables.
The Pro-Ject 2-Xperience SB DC vinyl turntable is delivered with a dust cover and a clamp.
Pro-Ject 2-Xperience SB DC : Listening and test review
From the opening bars, we were impressed by the 'laid-back' quality of this turntable! In fact, unlike some of its competitors, it seems tamer and less exuberant! That is not a defect, rather a trait of character that seems to tend towards neutrality.
The transparency is great and articulation is remarkable. The brass sections are beautiful, the tempo is very pronounced with cymbals reaching a very high pitch with a lot of subtlety and no harshness.
The transient definition and quality seem to top the previous version.
The timbre is rich and precise. The bass reproduction is physical and very well articulated, irrespective of the music played.
The soundstage is very consistent and perfectly places the instruments both in depth and width.
This is a great turntable that cleverly unites design and musicality. It focuses on the melodic and natural aspect of the music, as well as on the instrument timbre. It will eventually allow for a significant upgrade in terms of MM or MC cartridge.
Pro-Ject 2-Xperience SB DC : Unboxing
Like all good turntables, setup requires a bit of attention. A steady and perfectly level base, ideally made of wood rather than glass, is recommended.
An absolute must!
