This new Cambridge Audio AX R85 amplifier/tuner replaces the well-known SR10 by Cambridge Audio. It takes some technologies, while undergoing a real rejuvenation and several notable improvements.
CAMBRIDGE AUDIO AX R85: FRONT PANEL
To start, the external look has been redesigned and the quality has increased. The AX R85 has a beautiful front panel made of dark grey aluminium.
At its centre there is the LED display, showing all the functions and, among other things, the radio stations listened to. On the right, there is a large volume button and an Aux (MP3) jack in 3.5mm mini jack format.
Just below the display, there are the buttons for accessing the inputs and the pre-recorded stations (10).
On the right of the front panel, there is a stereo Jack headphone output of 6.35mm.
CAMBRIDGE AUDIO AX R85: BACK PANEL
At the back of the device there is an FM antenna jack (75 Ohms), an AM (300 Ohms), a Bluetooth 5.0 antenna and a USB jack. Caution, it does not process signals, it only offers the possibility to recharge a device.
There are 2 speaker outputs (A and B) that can be switched separately via a selector switch on the front panel.
There are 3 analogue inputs as well as an MM phono input, a subwoofer output (Sub Out) and a fixed audio output (Rec Out).
CAMBRIDGE AUDIO AX R85: TEST AND LISTENING
The Cambridge Audio AX R85 has a power of 85 Watts for a charge of 8 ohms. This power allows it to be associated to a wide range of bookshelf and tower speakers of 300€ to 1000€ the pair.
The restitution is both dynamic and pleasant. It enables presence and fullness.
The bass is surprising for an integrated amplifier of this range by its structure and articulation. The phono input allows you to take advantage of a good turntable (such as Rega Planar 2 turntable, Pro-Ject X1, etc.).
The FM tuner is a real plus. It demonstrates that the future shines bright for this source.
To have a coherent whole, it is advisable to associate it with the Cambridge Audio AX C25 or AX C35 CD players.

Excellent rapport qualité-prix
Un beau petit ampli/tuner d'un rapport qualité-prix excellent. Toutes les fonctionnalités essentielles sont là et même un peu plus. Parfait pour piloter des enceintes bibliothèque ou des enceintes à haut rendement faciles à alimenter, et là il est vraiment surprenant à ce prix. Par contre ne sait pas exploiter dans les medium, bas-medium et les basses des enceintes à plus bas rendement qui demandent de la puissance de réserve pour s'exprimer.

Après le "forfait" de mon combo BC Acoustique EX-712 (ampli + lecteur + radio), il fallait trouver un remplaçant pour ma chaine HiFi ... mon choix s'est porté sur le couple Cambridge AX R85 (ampli + radio) + AX C25 (lecteur CD), vraiment pas déçu de mon choix !!!
L'ensemble est classe, bien fini, la restitution sonore me convient tout à fait, le tout pour un prix contenu.
L'AX R85 manque (peut être) un peu de coffre dans les basse ...
D'ailleurs, j'ai commandé un 2ème AX R85 pour remplacer un horrible ampli home cinéma dans la pièce où se trouve la TV.
Et là rien à voir, TV, DVD et la musique sont devenu écoutables !!! Ouf !!!
J'ai gardé le caisson de basse du système 5.1 et ça va très bien !
Enfin, le service MaPlatine est top : délai, prix, conseils ... nickel !!!
