Description

The Naim Audio CD5si CD player continues the lineage of Naim's renowned CD players dating back to the 1990s with models like the CD3 and CD3.5. It replaces the well-known CD5i, introducing several technical improvements aimed at delivering enhanced performance.

NAIM AUDIO CD5SI: FRONT PANEL

True to Naim Audio's tradition, the CD5si features a front panel crafted from textured cast aluminum, exuding a minimalist and sophisticated design. The chassis is made from non-magnetic aluminum.

Located on the right side of the player are basic controls: Play, Stop, Next Track, and Previous Track. Additional functions are accessible exclusively via the provided remote control.

A green LCD display at the center indicates the selected track and time, complemented by 4 small LEDs indicating selection status.

On the right side of the front panel, there's the traditional manually operated disc tray. The tray opens in a circular motion, revealing the mechanism. It's suspended within its housing, completely isolated from the chassis. This design aims to simplify the mechanism for improved reliability by reducing the number of motors, gears, and belts. It also minimizes potential degradation of the audio signal.

The CD is placed directly onto the mechanism and secured with a magnetic clamp, a simple yet highly effective method that adds a touch of sophistication reminiscent of vinyl use, elevating the CD format.

NAIM AUDIO CD5SI: REAR PANEL

As expected, the rear panel features the traditional 5-pin DIN output.

A Naim Snac5 DIN cable is included with the player. For non-Naim systems, stereo RCA outputs are also provided.

Power is supplied via an IEC cord, allowing for potential upgrades with a high-quality power cable.

One minor drawback is the absence of a digital output.

NAIM AUDIO CD5SI: FEATURES

The Naim Audio CD5si is equipped with a new DAC.

After extensive testing and listening sessions, Naim has selected the Burr Brown PCM 1793 chip. Its processing and environment are closely aligned with those used in the Naim NDX.

The DAC's resolution can reach up to 24-bit/192 kHz, though it is capped here to provide a wide bandwidth (10 Hz to 20 kHz at 0.6dB) with very low noise and distortion levels (< 0.007%).

The CD5si also benefits from a more stable and precise DAC clock, a redesigned analog filter, and an improved optical mechanism. These enhancements were driven by Naim Audio's R&D efforts to enhance reliability, sound quality, and overall audio performance.

Each modification has been rigorously tested and validated over extensive hours of testing and listening.

NAIM AUDIO CD5SI: TESTING AND LISTENING

The Naim Audio CD5si CD player delivers exceptional musical performance.

It embodies all the qualities that have defined Naim's success over the past forty years.

The dynamics are outstanding, coupled with an unprecedented expressiveness and swing within its product range.

The bandwidth is notably wide, offering remarkable depth and punch in the lower spectrum. The soundstage, instrument placement, and openness are particularly impressive, setting it apart from many competitors.

Its tonal quality and natural sound make it versatile across various musical styles.

Undoubtedly, it stands out as Naim's best entry-level CD player to date and arguably one of the best available under 2000 euros.

Paired with a Naim Audio amplifier like the Naim 5si or a competitor's amplifier, it consistently enhances musicality and enthusiasm.

Our top recommendation!

Franck
