As a French company ourselves, we are particularly pleased when we’re able to feature a ‘Made in France’ product on our site! Micromega is well-known for its digital products, and particularly for its DACs. With this new ‘MY’ range, and more specifically its new MyGroov RIAA preamp, the company is now branching out into analogue.
This new product has a serious and original aesthetic, and is available in either black or white. On the back are the conventional RCA outlets for connecting the preamp to your vinyl turntable and amplifier, as well as a ground socket. On the front panel, there is a thumb wheel to switch the device from standby mode to MM or MC configuration. There is also a mute option between the MM and MC options to avoid unwanted thumps when switching between them. It also has built-in power supply, which is rare enough to be noteworthy!
The light on the front will change from red to white to indicate that the device is in standby mode. The production quality is remarkable for a product in this range, and it’s also worth mentioning that no chemical capacitors are used in the signal transfer or power supply.
We couldn’t resist pairing the MyGroov with a top quality turntable and excellent MM cartridge, and in doing so we discovered that this preamp can deliver impressive dynamic range and transparency. Reproduction is particularly nuanced and high fidelity. Its excellent timbre quality and impressive sound stage are also worth a mention! Even when paired with an entry-level MC cartridge it delivers impressive results and really does justice to the moving coil technology. Playback is very well-articulated and really gives the music room to breath. Naturally, its limitations will appear with a high-end moving coil cartridge (> €600), as its settings are not as in-depth as more highfalutin preamps…
In short, the MyGroov pleasantly surprised us and would be a great option for any music fan looking to build a high quality Hi-Fi system without breaking the bank! Highly recommended. Franck
